I know where some of the oil is going
The lower (turbo) valve covers were slightly warped so planed them on some glass for a tighter seal. Would explain some oil loss but no drips on the floor (maybe one..two max) but often nothing. More seepage and a dirty block than an identifiable leak source.
All of the head studs still in place and retorqued slightly under spec for safety sake bless their little non breaking hearts.

Yeah I know, so I torqued them to check going 8 lbs under spec...no more oil usage than normal, still a tad over 600 m per qt (620-650) but the warped covers allowed seepage.

Actually I asked Jack at Stuttgart SW how they check them and did that....he said if they are in basically ok to good condition they'll be fine. I wanted to know so took the chance....worked out thankfully.

600 miles/quart. Not really bad, yet. If the valve train is quiet, and it doesn't smoke during decel, leave it alone.

I'm with the lookie, no torquie crowd here.
Lest you enjoy a butt-puckering, millimeter by millimeter fingertips only exercise.
I can think of better places to look for oil loss, such as the oil return tubes or topside usual suspects ("triangle of death"). If your clutch is slipping and you have oil from the bottom of the tranny bellhousing, then the crankshaft seal is another one. Only nasty is the #8 bearing seal. That one is no fun.

And that, from a gentleman who made a living for many years working on these babies.

Ed, normally I'd agree with you but Jack is one of the most honest guys I've ever dealt with in any business. He's the guy that checked my car for possible rebuild and told me to come back in 5 years for a recheck...also consider the guy a friend. I trust his Porsche knowledge. He's been doing nothing but Porsche's for over 35 years as a wrench and now as the owner.
There are a few guys on this site that know him and I'd guess they'd say the same.
