Default 3.2 Fuch 7, 8J Tyre sizes

Hi Guys..

So I recently bought a beautiful 87 3.2 targa- and wanted to increase the wheel / tyre sizes to fill out the rims.. rears especially

anyway, I ordered some replica 7J / 8J fuchs alloys but the supplier said the
tyres designed for those rims are exactly the same sizes as those on the

6, 7 Js namely 205/55/16 on Front and 225/50-16 on Rear.
this just did not sound right..

so when I went to get them fitted I was really disappointed to see that the tyre was not flush with the alloy on the bigger rims.. and it looked pretty awful so I said no.

the supplier said that the only other tyre they can get in the size up are

215/55/16 and 235/50/16 in Toyo brands and are non N rated

So are the smaller tyres really the right size for these bigger rims?
(these are the rims that were only standard on the 89 carrera sport)

Does it matter if I go up to these sizes?
and surely someone other than toyo must do the bigger tyre sizes?

Finally my front 6Js look ok

is it much better to switch to 7s on the front if I am going to 8s on the back?

many thanks

Your supplier is correct
stock 6, 7 w/ 205/55/16 on Front and 225/50-16 on Rear.

the rear wheels can be moved to the front and 8 or 9" wheels mounted on the back for 8s 225/50(you can use 245/45 but IMO it's too wide a tire for that wheel and the grip at that end then gets sloppier than it needs to be) tires would be used for 9s 245/45 tires would be used

in front 215/50, 225/45 are other tire choices that generally work well.

again jmo but 215/55/16 and 235/50/16 are too tall for most users besides the gearing hit that you get w/ them they are harder to fit because of their height. You will find that 205/55 on 7x16 is a tight enough fit and you will want to trim the fender lips if the car has been lowered at all

thanks Bill

really useful

so would you go for a lower profile rather than the tall 55s?

how about a 45 on the rear? and 50s on the front?

Also looking differently what about going for a set of spacers instead?
read around a little and it seems a 21mm spacer is safe to use on the rears alone..

what is your opinion of these?

for 16" wheels I'd go no taller than 205/55 in front and 225/50 in back

in front 225/50 is wide and tall for the front on 7ET23(stock rear 16) and hard to fit right on a lowered car, so if you want a 225 a 225/45 is preferred because it is shorter.

In back 225/50 and 245/45 fit on 8ET10.6(stock 911 n/b rear wheel) 225/45 needs to have 9ET15, all are ok choices but I like 225/50 for 8s and 245/45 for 9s

no you cannot use a 21mm spacer, at least not unless you change to 930 fenders too.

you can use a smaller spacer to move the wheel out a bit, the exact width depends on your desires and the cars setup, but ~5mm +/- is all you would use in back, no spacer should be used in front w/ 7 or 8" wheels

Peter, any chance your car is just sitting too high up and tire size isn't the issue? What are your fender heights? Lowering 1/2" often makes a world of differance.

Boy did this thread just popped up in time, I also just received today a set of Fuchs replicas, I just bought a 1988 911 and it came with 6's front 7's rears so I order 7's for front and 8's for rears, 16" btw, so I was just going to swap my tires that came with the car cause they are brand new , I wanted wider wheels to fill the gap in the back , so hopefully it will work with this set up

Now im really interested to see how this works because the tyres looks too small for the rims on the ones in the shop.i.e. you get the rim sitting quite proud of the tyre/ not flush

Im worried yours might be the same.. please take some pictures to show..
also I felt the replicas looks a bit matt- and not very polished..

amber lamps.. no the wheels are set in too far..
the car is a little high- and yep could look at that

I think out cars look the same height , I will put my wheels next week and see how things will come out, nice ride btw..
I will be using my same tires.
I found this picture, not my car but it looks like this car has the big tires , i think and I don't like it..

They look sweet.
I have a set of 7s & 8s that still need to go get refinished, and then I plan on putting Bridgestone RE-11s on, 205/55R16 & 245/45R16. The sidewall height (and diameter) is almost identical between these two tires.
