Question first 911SC...couple questions

I just got an 81 911 sc last week. Its drives great and I love it. In Denver, its gotten a bit cold and Im noticing a few things Id like to confirm with you guys before I get worried.

During cold starts - low idle sometimes maybe around 5-7 RPMs, then once i start driving it it hovers just under 1k at idle.

Oil gauge (not druck press) - sits low, just above the redline until 10 - 15 min driving time, then can hover in the middle for the rest of the time. I know this reads oil level, and am a little concerned if its so low. After it warms up and im at a light, the gauge will read full, then when I accelerate, it dips to middle or lower.

Temp gauge - always low, no matter how long I drive it. sits right on the top line of the bottom box. Ive seen it rise to just above that box after sitting in traffic for 30 min, but thats the highest Ive seen it go.

Let me know what you guys think.

Hey, Rocky.

I haven't had to cold start issue, even in Chicago. It sounds to me like the idle might be set wrong. Could be the Warm Up Regulator. I don't have the url handy, but there's a replacement out that's cheaper than OEM and also has a USB connection to let you set various parameters. I'm sure someone here or at Pelican can point you in the right direction.

The oil gauge sounds right to me. Mine does that, and I've had the car for 20 years. Remember that 12 quarts of oil expand quite a bit, so crude sensors will get fooled when the car is cold. Just warm it up before pushing it. Expect dips when hitting the gas.

Temp gauge - mine sits about middle of the middle box. Less when it's cold out, more when it's hot out. Could be the sender itself is bad, or potentially the oil cooler loop is stuck open.

did your car come with a manual?

if so - start reading there - it actually is useful unlike modern cars that just spend 26 pages on seatbelt operation

sounds normal to me....they are a tad cold blooded...start up fine, little sluggish til warmed...make sure you drive conservatively until warmed up (needle out of the bottom white area or 10 minutes) before stretching its legs.
If the oil tank is properly filled (mid point on stick recommended) when measured ( 194 deg min. running, flat surface) then your oil gauge will register in the red generally when driving. I don't know anyone that looks at the oil fill gauge when moving and most don't trust it for anything....just periodically check with the dipstick...especially when new to the car to see how your oil consumption is.

Welcome! Generally don't trust that oil level gauge. Measure oil level with the dipstick, with the car warm, idling, on a level surface. CIS fueling commonly has cold running issues. Likely the warm-up regulator but could be the AAR (been awhile since i've had a CIS car!) too. This might be useful:

Oh, and post pics!

those behaviors are absolutely normal. just do lots of reading and you will be fine. read the porsche 101 thread for more help. the idle seems low as it usually should jump high till it gets warmed up but dont start throwing parts at it.
cis can be prone to temp changes. if its a new car may as well get the valve gap done and set the base co. this will do wonders for idle.

Even though the link is for an 82 SC, the above link might help. My SC is a 1979 so if you need any info from the owners manual just let me know.

It will appear to be more like 7" if you shave the hair around it.

har har funny guy!

I checked the oil while idling today, its between the high and low marks.

Something odd happened on the way to work today though. Highway speeds, around 3k on the tach in 5th for about 15 min and I felt a weird little surge in the power. I continued, but paid attention, and it happened once or twice more over the next 10 minutes until I got to work. As I arrived and parked, the idle was low, around 500-700 and running rough.
Then as I left work this morning, I got in, started it and tried to go but when I pressed the gas pedal, the car almost died. I waited a few seconds and tried again, and the same thing. I feathered the pedal a few times and finally the RPMs jumped, after that the entire ride home was fine.

It felt like the engine was not getting fuel for some reason. My fuel gauge said just under 2/4, and I reset the trip meter when I filled up and it was at 218 at work. What kind of range do these get on a single tank?

What do you guys think?

How old is the fuel filter, dirty injectors, how clean/not clean is the gas tank. Does not sound like a fuel pump, usually on or off even if intermittant.
If it was fuel starvation start at the tank and work back.
You can search for the method of checking injectors efficiency here or on the Pelican site.
If the tank is clear and the the filter new then try some injector cleaner in your fuel.
I'm sure you'll get some other more experienced responsesbut that would be my start point.

Congrats on the purchase. if y'all need a mechanic, Eisenbuds is the place to go. John & his crew know these cars inside and out and have been around for years.
