Looking at an 911 SC that pulled the AC hardware (exactly how much I'm not sure).
Has anyone considered converting to an electric AC system?
I live in Texas -- the car is coming from up north where AC is potentially optional -- it is not here :-)
thanks,
Mike

regardless i think any option to put AC back in would not be cheap . Rennaire is the only one i have heard of and it runs in the thousands.. price should reflect this

I drove a 911 for about 8 years in Dallas with no A/C, you just don't cruise around at 2pm in July.
That was why I also had the 928 with front and rear A/C.

to put in a good system that will work for your climate
Sure, but it all comes down to "power", whether you look at it as hp, watts, or btu's. The key issue with electric you can say simply is wattage, how many watts at what voltage to run the compressor. Your alternator does not have enough wattage, so if you tried to bolt on something else you would have
a more complicated system. So the "KISS" practice is to simply bolt on a normal compressor.
You will need collect all the missing parts, forget about the hoses, drier and compressor. In basic terms, you need in 'used' parts:
compressor mount
rear deck lid condenser
front condenser guard
evaporator box and its brackets and rh side plenum
Then you need 'new' stuff, like:
compressor
hoses, pressure switch
drier
better front condenser
better evaporator
addition fender condenser
new thermostat
For the used parts just keep check Rennlist and Pelican classifieds, they always pop up, winter is best time to buy used parts
There are several vendors whom have new system parts for what you need:
in alphabetical order:
Griffiths
Rennaire
Retroair
Here is some good reading material so you know what you really have to do,
to do the job right once:

AC is not an option -- DD for my wife/daughter to use.
Thanks for the pointers. Haven't crawled through the possible purchase yet so
I don't know that exact state of the system.
I've actually got a couple of Boxster/996 compressors? Be curious to see if a bracket could be made
and a pulley swapped to use one of those?
(I'm more of an M96 guy than an AirCooled :-)

i would not buy a sc as a daily driver for wife / daughter .. i think they are more enthusiasts cars than wife/ daughter daily drivers... i would get a chickster or cheap 3.4 .. they are far better daily drivers with superior climate control

The 996 is serpentine belt.
And, different fitting connections,,,,
Less expensive to use the correct compressor, such as 507,
and the upgrades to do the job right and do it once.
As far as the 964/993 system, they have more expensive issues:
cost of evap blower motors, time to R&R the evaporator, control issues.
Consider a 3.2 with motronic and if budget allows, an 87 with the G50.
Tiss the season to shop
