Porsche newbie considering 83 SC
#19
Little update since my last post. Decided to pass on the GP White 83 SC. PPI uncovered "original paint" wasn't. That wasn't the deal breaker. Repaint was bad. Didn't really notice it in the sunlight. Just thought it was old paint. Under flourecent light on the rack, sanding marks were visible. But, the invoice for the engine rebuild was 19k.
Went and checked out another 83 SC a couple of hours away. Seller agreed to drive car a couple hours to get PPI performed. Car is a little rough around the edges. Had a tentative agreement pending PPI. During PPI
some issues were found and the seller and I negotiated a lower price that I felt was fair. So, now I have my first Porsche.

Congrats! The car that I have owned the longest (9.5 years) is an 83 SC. I still think about the car once in a while and google its VIN in case it turns up for sale. I prefer SCs over the 80s Carrera successor.

Thanks mclaudio. I'll get some better pics later. Car needs a good washing. Not gonna lie, haven't driven a standard in 20 years or so and was really nervous. After everything I read, felt like if I touched the gear shift **** wrong the trans or engine was going to explode. A little freaked out by the oil level gauge, so during the drive home I pulled over checked the oil level. A quart and half low. Added oil and drove on.

Let us know how it goes on the PPI. Good luck.... and if you spend 20 k for a car with a recent rebuild and all of that done then you'll be in the same place a guy buying a car for 12k (no rebuild) would be in a few years generally.

im thinking you may have over filled it ..... better be checking out the Porsche 101 thread. You do know how to check it right ? with the engine running on level ground warmed up ?

Yeah. I checked it. Read owners manual. When I pulled into gas station. Checked it again. Kept an eye on oil pressure gauge to confirm what manual advised oil pressure should be at various rpms.

wow that brad penn kit is a great idea. should post that in the porsche 101thread to get new guys started right.
btw oil pressure has nothing to do with level. unless its got nothing left. a d do t worry. even if it is just off the dip stick it still has about 8 litres in there.

Thanks Iceman, there is definitely going to be a learning curve to go through. I'll take all the advise I can get. I'll try and get some pics taken this weekend , when I have a little more time.
