84 911 carrera buyers question
Glad I found you guys, because I need some advice. I do some part time volunteer work at a charity that fixes up donated cars for low income folks and we actually got in an 84 carrera. This is a car they will sell as it is not a good fit for folks on a budget, obviously. So, I have an opportunity to buy it, but don't know if I should take a chance on it. Not being a porsche guy, this is my best description.
1984 carrera targa 100,000 miles, sat unused for a number of yrs outside, pretty dirty,
Champaige w/ red interior. the heat has ruined the interior: needs door panels, seats recovered, dash replaced:cracked. Guages and faces look good. front and rear window seals look dried out. The car needs paint, targa top looks beat, tires, new foam for front seats, carpeting, doors shut solid, trunk in front looks solid, I believe it has black fuch wheels, the engine will turn, but car does not run. Nothing has been done yet to it, no oil change, fuel system cleaning, nothing. One mechanic suspected an electrical issue, but the donor said the car did run before it was sitting for years.
The paint is flaking over the rear drivers' wheel well, the rockers look solid with small dent under one rocker panel, minor small surface dent imperfections on rear trunk lid,, I can probably get it up on the lift to check underneath for rust, but let's for the moment say it is solid underneath. I understand its a gamble buying this thing non running. They already have a standing offer of $5500 as is.
I don't want to buy a project like this and have to sink in so much cash that I could have bought a clean one. The reason I am looking at it is because I don't have the funds to buy a clean one and was hoping by doing the interior kit, paint and minor mechanicals: brakes, fluids, tune up, I'd end up with this car for much much less than I would have to spend to buy one. Any suggestions?
Thanks much.

At $5,500 you could do ok parting it out, but....
On the plus side you get the 3.2L engine
On the minus side it could take $10,000 to resurrect her.
Let's say you start with fresh fuel, a battery, plugs, oil, and some starter fluid. If she fires you are half way there. Then you need tires, brake fluid, tags, and insurance just to see if it's road worthy.
...and are you sure about the color combination? Would be a wild ride:
outside
inside

Thanks for the imput. It was suggested I speak to a local club member, but what would anyone really be able to tell me in the non opp state? Before I ran it, i'd want the gas tank cleaned as well as the fuel lines, so that isn't gonna happen. Do you think another pair of eyes will provide any help regarding the soundness of the car? Yes the car is champaigne gold w/ burgandy interior(or what's left of it from sun damage.) Thanks B
