Newbie trying to buy a 1979 911SC
I am looking at a 1979 911SC that is a restoration project and have no idea of possible value.
This is what I know so far.
A nice low mile Porsche was taken completely apart for a complete restoration.
Body and paint was done by a high end quality type shop, same with engine.
Complete new interior too, along with new suspension.
Car is sitting on jack stands
Its basically a roller at this time that needs the complete interior installed along with windshield and trim. Engine is back in car, tires and wheels need to be installed to move it.
Owner died and the family wants it gone.
I have no idea what to offer for car.
Is it close to say it will take 100 hrs plus to finish?
Bumpers, door handles, lights etc are installed. Dash and column is also installed. Looks to me like complete interior needs to be installed along with windows, regulators.
A bunch of extra parts go with car.
What is a value range when done if properly restored?
I have spent the last day here reading and trying to learn.
What are the different model 911's for 1979?
Reading the VIN decoder I came up with the VIN should read 911931xxxx

Burning Brakes
1979
911 Turbo (930)
911SC Coupe
911SC Targa?
Others might have a better answer on your other questions, so I'll defer to those more knowledgeable.
NADA Values (911SC)
Low Retail $16, 200 Average Retail $19,200 High Retail $27,200
Values (Craigslist, Ebay, etc) are all over from under $10K to the NADA High Retail

Thanks!
I have not seen the car yet but a friend has.
Car was a nice complete running driving car then torn apart so lets hope everything is there. From what I understand there is also a parts car.
Sounds like the guy bought 10's of thousands of $ in new parts and work being done. Engine was done by a Porsche builder in california. Only detail I can recall is it had a updated piston of sorts I took that to bump compression some.
From what I am told the paint job exceeded 10k. Excited to see the car early next week so trying to do my homework ahead of time.
Supposed rust free car to start with. (but are they not all) LOL
Can someone give me an approx $$ amount for a proper engine rebuild?
Stacks of receipts go with car for everything purchased and work done.
Sad the guy passed away before he finished it.
Always liked the Porsche Red & actually painted a 427 Fairlane that color a few years back.
I do know a complete new interior goes with car also.

Sounds like a very nice project car ,if the paint is in good condition and engine rebuild has not been
disturbed by moisture ,sitting ,etc.
This is just a wild guestimate but i'd say a reasonably good condition '79 SC in parts (dissassembled)
should achieve at least half the value of a good condition complete running car.
Four to six weeks of good three to four hour stints/day should get it running even for a first timer,a little
more to install the interior correctly.
taking into consideration the reciepts for paint and mechanical I'd say your looking at a 10 -12,500
as it sits maybe more if they are knowledgeable of the early 911 scene..
If it will be a spotless complete repaired and refreshed example once done it should be worth 25K
done...Bert

Since you're new to the 911 game, let us know who DID build the engine. As one shop's rebuild is another shop's half-assed disassemble/clean(ish)/reassemble.
Bottom line is you've got to buy the car cheap to even think you'll be near whole when it's all said and done.

I suppose if you're talking about a car that's been prepped to the extent a 356 or early S might be for show (read: six figures), but I know of no SC that's been restored to that level. Another decade or two? Maybe!

True most SC's these days are well below that figure and I haven't seen any
recently but low mileage ,perfect paint and interior cars exist and command
these prices and more.
maybe I could caveat that and say most average to very nice SC's are worth
15-20K all cleaned up and ready to go...
