Hey guys,

I just signed up here and wanted to introduce myself. I've peeked in at a few of the forums here over the years and decided to sign up. I don't own a Porsche yet, but hopefully late spring/early summer 2013 I'll buy one. The question is which one. Ideally it would be the 993, but that's out of my price range. I've been told by the local Porsche mechanic to stick to those between 1980-89 as far as 911's go. I like the 964's, but I've heard they have issues. And of course I could buy a 944 turbo for affordability, but that car just doesn't make my heart beat faster. So in the mean time I'll keep looking around here, and when the time gets closer and I start test driving or looking at cars I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions for you guys. I look forward to it.

The '84-'89 Carrera was the sweet spot for me at first. Then I narrowed that down to the G-50 era cabriolet. So Cal was crawling with what I was looking for, but they were all trashed. Interiors were bad, paint and rag tops were horrid, engines were dirty, body panels were dinged like they were golf *****.

Just keep looking and one will come to you. The most important thing to look for is a solid motor. I've had to spend many many hours cleaning parts, repainting parts, replacing rubber bits and attend to lots of differed maintenance...etc.

If you are good with a wrench, you don't need to fear maintenance costs. I have not paid a dime to a mechanic to do anything to mine. I've done it all and I'm nothing more than a weekend shade tree, pain killer junkie with good friends on rennlist to call in a pinch.

She's got new RS carpet, RSR door cards, steering wheel. I did it all with a few calls to appbiz.
new rotors, pads, flex lines, hard lines, sensors. I did it all with a few calls to Steve Weiner.
new plugs, wires, distributor, fuel lines, valve adjustment. I did it all with a few calls to Peter Zimmermann for help and Pelican for parts.
new shocks, strut inserts, turbo tie rods. I did it all with a few calls to Steve Weiner.

Also gotta add that Rusnak moved heaven and earth to help me out.
....and while I'm at it Ed Hughes has answered the call on many occasions.
Basically there is nothing that can't be done with the help of the guys here on rennlist.

I've even done my own wheel alignment with equipment from Paragon.

....and the H4's and relays also came from Steve Weiner.

I was in this car yesterday - it's like a time capsule

the coolest thing was the fabric sport seats...they are really comfortable - I think they are optimistic on the price but.... it is getting a PPI today so i figure someone liked it

Hi,

Welcome to the Rennlist Community; a great place to meet generous, similarly-minded people with a common interest and a willingness to help a fellow PO.

All of these cars have strengths & weaknesses so its simply a matter of driving good examples of each to see which one you like and can maintain.

That said, you really cannot go wrong with a Carrera or an SC as long as you get a good one. "Mechanics Specials" can most oftentime sully the experience so do your due-diligence on any one you are considering so you don't get ambushed. As long as you have a realistic budget, you will have the time of your life!!

Good luck!!!!

As Steve aptly noted, any 911 can have issues, so that preparation by you in reading up on various years and what to look for, and having a mechanic who truly knows air-cooled Porches ( don't assume your local Porsche dealer(s) have such a mechanic) do the inspection for you can truly help ensure you have a great experience. Welcome & Good Luck!

Have fun with it. I'm a G50 fan myself and it HAS to be a coupe! :-)

It's a great group. They've fielded plenty of my silly questions and my understanding of my car has totally magnified. Learn as much as you can and go get one! You won't regret it if you do your homework and ask questions. Good luck!

that's awesome! go for it....
I recently joined the club with a very exciting car: 07 Targa 4S.....
don't let price put you off: it will still be a Porsche you know?

joining a forum is such a good idea these days and is actually a lot of fun too....
not to mention broadening your outlook......kudos for doing it you know?
before I bought my e550 I joined a Benz forum.....like you have here.....before
my initial purchase.....and learned so much that when my car finally did arrive I knew
a lot about it, and a lot more about the Marque too, which is great.....

good luck....
