Default 1980's speaker grills

I can't believe that Porsche used such cheap-looking speaker grills back in the day! Now my problem is that they are cracked, and no amount of superglue will keep them together or make them look new again. FYI, I'm looking for the door speaker grills from 1985.

This weekend I hit several of the local stores looking for replacement speakers with 5 1/2" squarish grills to replace them, but I guess times have changed. I wasn't able to find anything even close.

Is there a source for NOS grills? Anyone found an aftermarket solution that looks stock? I have no problem replacing the speakers too, but I don't want anything in there that looks out-of-place (i.e., too modern).

I would take a peek on the bird for someone who might have used grills in good order, you'd be damn lucky if you found NOS parts...

Personally I have RSA door cards anyways and the round grills go nicely with them

NOS grills are hard to find. eBay and swap meets could have some show up or dismantlers could have some on wrecked cars with intact interiors.

As far as drop in replacements, you need to skip US English sized 5.25 inch speakers and look for European sized speakers in 130 millimeter size. Hertz makes a drop in co-axial in 130 mm size. I have a used set for sale (went back to stock) if any one is interested. Grills are round and black. No new holes need to be drilled in the door cards.

I have a pair of front speakers and grills from a 84 Targa that I can sell you. I think they are in decent shape, but let me dig them out. Price? I have no idea what they are worth.

Thanks for the info guys! I'd prefer to replace my broken ones with a set of uncracked originals, but if I can't find any, I'll go with whatever fits the hole & looks decent.

(SiberianDMV, let me know if you find them)

Here is what I have. They are black plastic and they look nearly new, amazingly enough. No cracks or scratches. They measure 5 1/2 inches edge to edge and the holes are slightly less than 5 3/4" diagonal.

I am turning my Targa into a mostly track car, and I replaced the speakers anyway, so they are yours if you want them. I know OEM Porsche parts are rediculously over-valued, so make me an offer by PM. I tried to respond to your PM but I couldn't figure out how to put the pictures in the PM.
