Back to wheels:

There seems to be a much better selection of tires for 16" wheels than for 15" wheels, especially in track tires. There are some used 16" Fuchs on ebay for "reasonable prices", most seem to be 6" front and 7" rear. My current 15" are 7" and 8".

Will 205/55-16 fit well on 6" wheels and 225/50-16 on 7" wheels?
Those were standard sizes on those wheels.

If It was me I'd get some fake Fuchs 17's for the street and run track rubber on the 15's. If I keep racing I will probably go to 15's from the 17's I run now. Its like a R&P change with way less expensive tires. The guys running 15's just leave you coming out of turns.

What sizes and brand/model tires are they running?

one of the most significant changes you can make to your car for the track is to improve the tire quality. going from a street tire to a DOT-R will show you how much grip your car really has, as well as help point out suspension limitations and body lean. if the intent is to become a better driver and gain keener understanding of your car, get tires. if that means bolt-on spacers and twisties, do it. going up to 16" rims will not significantly alter your performance and the benefit and knowledge you gain are worth it. worry about looking pretty on the street. at the track, concentrate on smooth, incremental performance improvements. jmho

They are running 8's & 9's since that is the limit they can go in the stock classes.
Rules state 1" wider than available from the factory. No diameter restrictions though. Tires are 245 & 275 hoosiers with a bit of massaging to get them in there.
Obviously they don't drive dack and forth to the track on them so lack of any tread is no concern.

For what it's worth , my Fuchs came off of a '82 911 SC, they are 16"x 6" and 16" x 7" with 205/55 + 225/50. I love them. I had 215/60-15 on 15 x 7 before , HUGE improvement in grip !
You should be able to get 225/50-15 & 245/50-15 on your rims, that will give you better grip and keep the rears around the 25" mark (24" on the front).

17" Turbo Twists and Cups are available used for an affordable price. The BBS, Kenesis, Fikses, etc that I have looked at are too expensive.

Oh, well, I was just plannin ahead, no rush. I've still got to figure out how to install my used Safety Devices rollcage; a mounting kit from Britain costs almost as much as the cage, so I guess I will make my own.
I've got a set of 17" turbo twists I'm selling if you're interested.

This is the setup I will use in my car:

4 Rota Fuchs styled 17" wheels (2-17" x 7.5 Front and 2-17" x 9 back ) with 225/45-17 for the front and 255/40-17 tires for the rear wheels. No need for spacers since they come with the correct off-set.

I'd go with the Rota Fuchs in a heartbeat, but this car is now a 90% track car, DE only at this point. Any 16" or 17" rims I buy have to be strong like bull.

I haven't pulled the trigger on the Twists listed above because I'm not sure if they are good enough for track use. Looks are of secondary concern to me, although I agree that any Fuchs, real or not, looks 10x better on these old cars.

What about the Euromeister Fuchs? They are low pressure cast, fairly light and available in 17". They are also cheaper than the Rotas.

More reason to not buy twists-you don't want to deal with big spacers on a track car-some clubs may give you grief about them. If you're switching between sets, you won't want to deal with the hassle.

Find a set of BBS wheels.....they too are somewhat iconic on these cars.
