Have any of you driven with the headers open - no muffler?
Guys, I've installed a set of used headers I got from a friend, and installed the Flowmaster muffler setup that he had. the two systems don't quite mate up though, so I need to head to my local muffler shop to have the guy get everything lined up. That leaves me with the task of possibly driving with OPEN headers to his shop about three miles away.
I started it up and it's OBNOXIOUS! Like Drag Racer obnoxious.
Have you guys done this?

In Mission Viejo they shouldn't be a problem.
I drive the race car with the megaphones through the hood every once and a while just to remind the neighbors why they dislike me so much.

Scott, I did that when I put the headers on Ruby. I had to drive about 12 miles to the shop. Did it at 6am on a Saturday-I figured with less cars on the road, I could spot cops easier. When you let off the gas once you get to speed, it tones down a lot. But leaving stoplights and going through the gears, or any throttle is a different story. I got to the shop early, and went to have a couple of coffees until they opened up.

I did it years ago, 1972-3?, with my 1965 Pontiac LeMans, when I switched out the 326 engine for a 455 out of a wrecked Trans-Am. The 455 came with factory exhaust that was very header-like, and I had to drive it to Midas. They actually did a very good job fabricating an entire dual exhaust system.
It sounded like Zeus farting.

Having a 911 owner as a neighbor makes it a lot more acceptable! that grant I've at some point pretty run run 3 cars straight header, one was a turbo so that helped a lot, all were um "accidents" well call it that, mainly due to a lil rally, or testing
cops have been pretty cool to me so far about it haha

I'm going to try it at some point with my car ...my Fabspeed headers came with short turn offs which clamp directly to the headers thus bypassing the muffler !
Next time i go to the cabin up north i'll bring them along and install them.It will probably scare the deers and the wolves deep into the woods ... lol
Before i owned a Porsche i had an RX7 for many years on which i had installed some 2 into 1 headers, now that unmuffled sounded like a chainsaw on steroids
Cheers !

Well, I did it today. Interestingly, as you said, Ed, the car quieted down (somewhat) at 2000 RPM and beyond. Idle was bad, and accelerating was worse, but no one seemed to even give me a second glance.
Once at the shop, the headers were aligned with the Flowmaster 80 dual-out muffler and she was fired up. Wow! It sounds incredibly raw and old school now!
I'll try to figure out how to post a sound clip later on.
