Unhappy New Cab Top

Well it finally happened... I lived with the small tears at the hinge points, but when the window cracked... the time arrived.

I know there are lots of cabriolet owners on the list. I have tried searching the archieves to no avail and have solicted input from some on the list.

The question: Where's the best place to go to buy a good quality cabriolet top at a good price?

Hey there, cab&guy,

My mechanic recommended a really good and reasonably priced upholstery shop. I think the price for a new top (including installation) was around $1300.

It sounds like your top is at the replacement point, otherwise I'd recommend just replacing the rear plastic window.

Good luck!

Thanks Melissa,

It is my hope that all the cab people out there will help contribute to this post in order to build a better archive on the list for finding cab tops and parts.

For those on the list needing seals... right now through May 15th, Performance is having a 20% off sale.

I need a new top as well. I found these guys:

http://www.cabrioworld.com/acb/showprod.cfm?&DID=14&ObjectGroup_ID=5&CATID=2

But I know nothing about them. Their prices seem very good which makes me sceptical. My top is still working so I have a little time. Let me know how you make out.

Cheers,

I needed a new top for my 86 cab last year, it was torn during initial installation of a DAS removable roll bar- As the top was original, and 14 years old, the installer and I finally agreed to split the costs (this was Dougherty systems, and I feel they [and I, for that matter!]were ultimately fair in our dealings, BTW ).
Because we were splitting the cost, and they were going to subcontractout to the guy they ususally ised, I asked around NY/PA quite a bit - Prestige Porsche (dealer)wanted $4,000 for OEM, and I can't remember if that included installation!
I found several well recommended installers who all quoted me about the same price - $2,500, for non-OEM replacement,w/ new window.
The top is fine, tho I've just noticed, maybe, a little more wind noise than before - but it might be that loose window that was just fixed...
hope this helps

My understanding is that there are at least two different "grades" of cab top material. My 87 Cab came with a replacement top that is I think the more lightweight material - not sure whether that makes it not OEM etc. I think, and don't take my word on this, the original German tops were made of a heavier material.

Look hard at your seals, might be the right time to do them too - the vertical B pillar ones can be replaced at any time - not sure about the horizontal side window top seals though.

Here is at least one site to look at and two links from it - no idea of how good they are though.

Hope that helps.
