Smile Oil Filter and motor oil question

Hi, would the oil filter for a 77 3.0 Carrera be trhe same as as a 78 SC 3.0. I am assuming yes, but before I call around I figured I would ask.

Second, what grade oil do I need and what is a cheaper alternative to Mobile 1?

I use the car as a weekend driver and keep the racing around to a very low minimum. Oh, it's a 77 3.0 if that matters.

Thanks.

David,

Yes, the oil filters are the same, with the current Porsche part number 930.107.764.01. I use the Mahle filter, as Porsche changed to US made filters a few years ago, which seem smaller. Mahle's, made in Austria, manufactured the Porsche filters up to a few years ago.

You may want to search the archives for Porsche approved oils, which applies to all models after 1974. That will give you some options.

I know I'll get some flack on this thread, but.....my experience with Mobil 1 was not a positive one.

I did research, reading all the threads I could find on synthetics, and observed mixed forum thread responses (mostly positive). Its generally well known that older or higher mileage engines are more prone to leaks with Mobil one or synthetics in general, but given that. I had only 10K miles on a perfect rebuild, I went for it. The engine developed leaks in multiple places within 3 months. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

Needless to say, I switched back to Castrol 20/50. The leaks disappeared.

Just my $.02.

David:

I'll affirm what Bill G told you; the Mahle OC 54 filter is the one to use.

If Mobil 1 is not an option; I'd suggest Kendall GT-1 in 20w-50. Nothing better in a dino oil!
