Default H4 headlight seal question

I'm in the process of cleaning up my H4 headlights and noticed that there was no rubber seal installed on the headlight opening for the H4 assembly to seal against. I ordered what I thought was the correct seal from Pelican, but don't think that there is enough room between the fender and H4 housing for it. Has anyone run across this issue?

I don't know precisely what you have, however I can tell you that the current factory seals are thicker than they used to be and that makes it a real challenge to install the headlight assemblies.

It takes patience to get the top edge of the lamps hooked over the small ridge on the fender and then push down on the lamp to align the bottom screw and get it started. Its almost a two-person job since another hand is needed to put pressure at the top while the securing screw is tightened down.

Sounds like what I have. Since there weren't any seals on the openings I don't have anything to compare the new ones to. I put one of the new ones on, but like you pointed out they are thick and it appeared that it would take a fair amount of compression of the gasket to get the headlight housing to go down in place. I'll give it another try. Thanks for the input.

Steve is absolutely right again. It is a fairly over-sized ring that really has to be compressed.

tbanasiak, you didn't mention what kind of car are you referring to. If a 996/997 they may fit. But for H4's for 911's to '89, those seals are approximately 1/2 mm thicker. It takes a lot of patience and help to get them seat properly. Once done, they'll seal out anything.

Well I got them installed. They do fit well, but I found that I needed to make sure that the lip at 12 oclock was left exposed which made hanging the top of the housing much easier. I suspect that when I go to change a headlight bulb the next time that the gaskets will have compressed some and the assembly will be easier. Thanks for the input everyone. Warren
