I will be replacing the battery in my 83SC and I'm wondering if the mounting kit needed to mount the Optima battery requires drilling into the car or if it uses the original attach points?
Any recommendations on yellow vs. red top? I am leaning towards the red as I don't drive the car much during the winter months, hate rock chips!
Also, in a Panorama artical, a Sonnenschein Gel-Cel was recommended. Has anyone tried this battery and any idea of its cost?

Bob,
You may want to take a look at a discussion on the 993 board <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=006221" target="_blank">here.</a>

I have an early 911 with dual batteries. I like the idea of an Optima but do I convert to a single unit? What size have others used and met with sucess?
TIA

Thanks Bill.
It looks as though the battery in a 993 is clamped down via the sides were mine is held down by the ends. I went to the optima page to look at pictures and these batteries don't appear to have any edge to clamp down on the ends. I understand that this is circumvented using the "kit" from optima. I just don't want to drill holes for this to work although I am sure I can figure some other way to hold it down...two bungee cords and some duct tape!

The red top Optima will saturate faster with less strain on charging system. You might want to check out the Aerospace Components web page for a trick and safe mounting kit.It is Accepted by most sanctioned racing orgs.and is a compliment to any upgrade.

Bob,
There are various mounting kits available from several vendors for the Optima. As you noticed, 993 mounting is different from 911 mounting.
You will not need to drill any holes. The Optima mounts to a plate that has a footprint similar in size to a larger standard size battery. The standard battery clamps then hold the mounting plate.
You may also need to purchase a longer ground cable, as in many cases the factory one is too short to reach the smaller Optima.
Good luck,
Tim
