Lightbulb Wheel weight adhesive

Anyone have any tips on getting the sticky stuff off of Fuchs wheels used to stick the wheel weights on the rim?

After several sets of tires and being balanced a few times I have some old sticky patches that need to be removed.

Ideas?

TIA,

Joe

I use laquer thinner, a small amount, and work quickly. Bug and tar remover might work as well.

Test in an inconspicous area first, though...

Hot, soapy water (car wash soap), a terry cloth rag and a little elbow grease (not to mention patience) has always worked wonders for me. Follow this up with a little cleaner/wax and you should be good to go. I would be very careful using any chemical removers such as thinner. In many cases these can damage the finish.

I use Simple Green for just about anything, it never hurts anything, and I remove just about everything after soaking it for a minute. I used it last week to remove so ducktape/racers tape glue, and use it consistently on my motorcycle to remove any grease and other road grime.

Joe,
I use brake parts cleaner on a shop towel.
I also recommend Mothers Mag Polish or Blue Magic metal polish for your Fuchs. This is what I do for a living now, so I get lots of wheels with weight tape glue on them.Oh,yea,
I finally got my A/C going !!!! it had a blockage in one of the lines.

Everyone,

Thanks for the tips and will try some of them out today.

Chuck, glad that you found the problem. Where was the blockage? Now you know why your A/C compressor was not working!

Thanks,

Joe

3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover works great. Works very well for removing tar, wax, grease, undercoating, etc. Just let soak for a minute to get better results.

Actually, I found the Xenit citrus spray stuff from Stoner works great for removing the sprayed on coating that is found on the engine case, trans. case, all over the inside of the wheels and basically everywhere you don't want it.

Made the underside of the motor and trans. look like new.

Kevin

You are joking, that can not be the bottom of your car, that's worthy of being in a museum. Nice work!

Kevin,

Your picture has made me forget about cleaning my wheels... where can I get some of the cleaner you mentioned to do the rest of the car! Have never heard of Stoner...

Jeez that looks nice...

Joe,
The blockage came from a bad install I had done last summer when I had the Sanden compressor, the shop that did the work used teflon tape on compresson fittings and thread sealer on other fittings, some of the thread sealer got into the system. Pep boys sells the Stoner products, their wheel cleaner is really good too, I use it along with their window cleaner.Zims ad in the back of Pano has a funny write up under the Stoner Tire cleaner, look for it !

I cleaned the motor and trans. with a number of things when I pulled them out over the winter.

I tried brake parts cleaner, Simple Green, Goop smooth hand cleaner, and then happened across the Xenit stuff at Menards (i'm sure i've seen it at Pep Boyz and Trak Auto also). It was on sale for $1.92 a can so I figured what the heck. Brake cleaner worked good but I got tired of the fumes. The Xenit works best when you spray it on and rub it with a light brush/toothbrush or Scotchbrite pad. The resulting crud that you get MUST be rinsed off with SOAPY water. Plain water just smears the crud around. I used the Xenit/Dawn dishwashing liquid soapy water rinse on the trans. and the insides of the rear bumper and rear fender extensions and it worked great. The stuff couldn't have worked any better.

Wurth also makes a citrus cleaner. I have some but haven't tried it yet. Motorhead.net sells all kinds of Wurth stuff. I got it thru them.
