I have read with great intrest two posting regarding engine "whistling".
One situation was determined to be caused by to little gear oil, which caused 5th gear to be exposed and suffer wear.
the second post I read suggested that the "air leak" type sound may or was caused by a deffective 02 sensor.
My 89 911 (172 K) began ommiting this sound on the tail end of a 450 mile ride. My mechanic suspects it could possibly be a intake manifold gasket. it sounds like the whistle is coming from or near the air box.
any ideas?

hey that whistling post is me!
Still haven't figured it out...it is like a disease...now it does it in 3rd...I am thinking it is gear oil....
but what bothers me it is only between 2200 and 2600 then it stops...or maybe gets too high pitched for human ears???
well I am going to fill it up till it is completely full then we will see....

"Completely full" being until it drains out the hole on the side of the transmission where you are filling it. Sorry if that's obvious...When you say "completely full", I envision someone pumping oil in through the vent on top until it's literally full! ![Big Grin](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

Just maybe .... Check the fan belt. Mine was dorked up. Tightened mine up and the whistle went away. Steve Wiener helped me search with propane for an intake leak found nothing. Changed belts it went away for a while. But I have the belt about as tight as I what to put it. But found that I had the wrong belt. Mine should be 9.5mm and I have 10mm on it that doesn't help. Plus my alternator pulley was off a 2.7 with the air pump. So check it out.
Good Luck

Without actually hearing the noise it's tough to speculate if you have a problem, or just a typical 915 transaxle. They do chatter a bit. That is one reason why Porsche originally installed the infamous Rubber-centered clutch. It was intended to quell gearbox noise coming into the cabin.
Sometimes the chatter can be made worse than it should be if the motor and transaxle are slightly mis-aligned. If you simply loosen the four bolts in the center of the rear motor mount, then re-torque them, this will often bring things back in line. The noise may be reduced as a result.
