Hi guys,
It looks like I am going to do as much prep on the car as I can, and then hand it over to a shop to R & R the belly pan and fuel tank support. I will seal and paint and undercoat when they are done with the metal work. I have decided to get this repair done, at a cost of about $1,100, to make the car safe to drive, and then assess the rest of the car and decide whether to sell her or keep her.
I haven't contacted the seller yet, but I plan to do so next week, after I am certain of the exact cost of all this.
In the meantime, I saw another fellow on here who replaced his pan a few years ago, who also installed "LCA Reinforcements". See pic below-
Any idea where I can get these? Pelican wasn't familiar with this part, and I like the idea of adding these to the pan.

I know this sucks, but think about it this way, yea you got punked out of $1,100 and some blood sweat and tears, but imagine if you found out (as several RL have) the motor was trash.... $1,100 is chicken feed...
These are great little cars, once all patched back up it will be fine. I would run around with that ice pick (figurely speaking) and make sure you have solid metal in the pan and rockers. Now is the time.
good luck with it,

Good advice, J.
I'm feeling a little better about the car now, after seeing how common a problem this is. When I take it in to have the suspension pan replaced, I'm going to have them assess the entire body.

Shannon,
I hear what you are saying, and it makes a lot of sense, but I want a driveable/sellable car before I decide to keep or sell- I have no desire to go through the process of parting it out or moving everything to another tub. Also, the widebody car without engine & trans that was for sale locally has a totally rotted pan as well.

Go to Pelican 911 forum and do a search.
Many have had to do this even galvanized cars from 78 up. Look at the torsion tube too. I had to replace my TT and front pan on a 1970S that was only 14 East coast yrs old at the time.
I also had to do the 1972 when I was building a track car.
There are many preformed replacement parts. Lower windshield tin, rear "elbow", (below the TT ends) door skins - total skin and bottom sections, etc...
