I'm going to be looking at a 71 911E Sportomatic this week. Has ac, sunroof. Original silver now red (darn it).
99,000 miles, top end rebuild (by prior owner, don't know when), "no rust".
I haven't seen it yet, but when I do I will post pictures.
When I go see it, what should I look out for? It sounds like it's a daily driver now, which is what I am looking for.

Bill,
Bruce Anderson, in the May 2001 Excellence, listed the 71E coupe values poor/good/excellent as 6669/7582/10150, and for the Targa 7097/8069/10803.
I believe the 911E had the hydropneumatic front suspension. I think most would call it a plus if it's been converted to a standard strut setup. If you think you have a match between you and the car, be sure and get a pre-purchase inspection from a knowledgable person.

Actually, I'm not *sure* I want a Sportomatic. But I do want a pre-74 daily driver. And I will want to keep the car for a long time, so I am not too concerned with resale.
From what I have read (no actual experience) the Sporto doesn't give up much in comparison to the straight manual.
If you have experience with a Sportmatic good or bad, please post. Also, what's the price range for replacing with a standard?

Go try out the sportomatic, and decide if you want one. If not, buy one with the clutch already installed.
You'll pay maybe $7-$8K for the sporto 911, then up to $2K for a transmission, either a replacement pedal cluster with the clutch or some other jury rig for the clutch, clutch cable itself, the clutch kit ($500), maybe a new flywheel, maybe a new speedometer pickup? Rough order of magnitude, another $2.5K-$3K+ in parts, plus yours or someone elses labor, to convert it. Don't know if the sporto uses the same mounts. The engine is different for the sporto than for manual xmission - don't recall why.
If you decide you want a clutch, buy it as it came from the factory. There are lots of pre-74's that will make good daily drivers. If your plan is to buy one and keep it for awhile, then spend the time to find that one.
