What should I take on a trip?
So I have had my 1987 Carrera for a few weeks and am loving it! It has been fun getting to know the car and to start "personalizing" it. Now my wife and I are planning our first trip with the car -- Boston to Montreal for a long weekend later on this summer. Even though this is the most solid car that I have ever driven, I feel that I still have to take into account that it is a 25 year old car...
When I asked him, the guy that I bought the car from (Noah Loren of Lift Throttle Automotive) suggested that I bring along extra fuses and relays, my repair manual, and plot some locations of repair shops along the way in order to ease my mind.
I figured I would ask here if anyone can recommend repair shops between Boston and Montreal, and to see if anyone has any other recommendations. The one thing that I would love to have -- working a/c, will have to wait...

The advice to do some research to identify mechanics along your route will provide you with great peace-of-mind IF it is in addition to having AAA's Plus or Premier emergency road service in your wallet
Have a great time...there is nothing to compare to a road trip in the 911!

At minimum, make sure you've a spare DME relay...and the full capability to change out the belt(s), if necc'y....fuses are a given'.
BEST!

If I had a box of cubans, I'd hope to break down along the way, preferably near a spot with cold beer.
Everyone does things differently, but I've actually used my collapsable spare a few times. I would opt for that over a tire plug (I prefer a patch).
I would recommend a flashlight, fuses, DME relay, tire compressor (NOT Fix-a-Flat), flares, factory tool kit, extra headlight bulb if you have one, alternator belt, utility knife, small brass brush, and maybe a set of allen key wrenches.

I'll add "multimeter"... it doesn't leave my car
Enjoy the trip, my money says you have zero issues. In the 2 months since my alternator/battery replacement, I've done 7,000 (give or take a few) trouble-free miles. The car never ceases to amaze me.

...a french/english dictonary for Montreal
Seriously, I wouldn't be worried too much ! I drove my '68 Triumph GT-6 to Stowe and back with no issues. I hear 911s where made from driving ! My guess is that such trips are actually good for your car Enjoy the ride.
PS: The views in Franconia Notch park (NH) are awesome ! Great place to stop for coffee or just to comtemplate the beauty of nature. Have fun in Montreal !

Fwiw, I drove my SC from NYC to Montreal with nothing but a map (this was pre GPS but the car was still 20+ years old) and some "street smarts". Canada ain't exactly a 3rd world country. Be mindful of the mountains and wonderful views between Boston and Montreal. The car should be fine.
The more you pack "for the car", the less confidence the car will know you have in it and will surely then break down

Well -- we made the trip. Montreal was a lot of fun, and the car ran flawlessly. Of course, the hot weather had us running with the windows and sunroof open. Hot. And loud! Wimp that I am, the trip has me thinking about replacing/upgrading the a/c... I did not take any pictures, but I did see and orange GT2/RS parked in Old Montreal -- can't be too many of those around, eh?
