Post '87 Carrera Front Wheel Bearing Adj?

Help! Yesterday I went through a club inspection of my car for an upcoming track event. It was mentioned that my front wheel bearings (while not old) could use a little tightening. But I've got one problem: I can't get to the main center nut for adjusting. Cars I've had in the past had a center cap that pops off and away you go. While the Carrera looks like it have center caps, they don't budge for anything. Connected to each rotor is a large item that ultimately allows the wheels to be mounted (I don't believe I have any "spacers"). While I thought this would have been real straightforward, it has made me feel very dumb. Thank you. Dan

Dan you are definitely on the right track. The dust cover for the wheel bearing is just a bitch to get off. Many posts on how to do it both here and on the Pelican board. My favorite is to just get a hammer, tap on one side towards the outside edge of the cap, rotate 180 degrees and tap on other edge. It will eventually work its way off. The cap is made of really thick metal so as long as you don't tap too hard you will not dent it.

I use a slide hammer with an......8 or 10 mm bolt to screw into the cap. Some PB Blaster sprayed into the hub ID may help also.

Dan,

They are just hard to get out, as Kurt pointed out. I use a 8-10" long bolt, and putting an end on the cap and the end to hit by the hub, tap, tap ,tap, (or whap, whap, whap) rotate a little, tap, tap, tap, rotate a little....eventually comes off.
