I have just put my fuel tank back in the car after repairing it but now my 1982 SC wont run, backfires and i can see flames on the backfires in the throttle butterfly area, please help.

Did you do anything else to your 911 either just before you took the fuel tank out, while it was out, or immediately after putting it back in?

Mr. Gregory is the resident CIS expert, but it sounds to me like the fuel flow to the engine has been somehow restricted. The backfiring may be due to fuel starvation. You don't want to run the car this way, as you may blow the (expensive) airbox to pieces, or start an engine fire.
I would suggest you back-track and inspect all the fuel line connections. Also, are you sure the pickup and filter inside the tank are not plugged with debris??
