Who'd do this to a poor ol' '68 SWB?

Well, 25+ years ago they were just POS old 911s. Found some old photos recently. This was from probably 1988 at an event, though I did the final version of the body like this in '86 just after I opened my first shop. I think I had a short stroke 3.2L wannabe RSR setup built on an early 930 crankcase, through a stock transaxle and '69 2.0S clutch at this point. That had a half life of about a half lap..........
Funny to see how soft we used to run them.

The rockers were a necessary evil. Real 930 ones were expensive, and then I would have had to cut them since I was working with a SWB model. So AIR or Mitcom (I forget which LA fiberglass house) to the rescue. The 934-esque nose was necessary for the two AC condensers, my one concession to making the car livable in Phoenix. The car was still barely over 2200 lbs. with the mag case 2.7RS "plus" engine.

8 + 10" Gottis! Bought them after this POS truck and raggedly trailer towing some old 911 comes and pits next to us at Willow Springs back in '81 or '82. Oh, 911 was an IROC RSR.............

God I'm still trying to figure out how to sort my A/C for this coming summer, that tiny lil condensor with now fans is prop not gonna cut it in 110+... Prop gonna need to wire a fan up too it
I've also had the crazy idea to hook up either a cold water mister or a C02 mister for an intercooler to it, I think with a fine enough nozzle, and the temps that engine bay has a cold water mister cold work.... C02 will shorten the life span of that condensor greatly!

I think this was typical in the 80's to breath some life back into rusted out SWB's by making them look like SC or RS. In fact I have one in my garage presently. One trick was the rear torsion bar access hole which would get covered by modified by later model LWB rocker panels.
By mid 70's in the salt belt a SWB probably already was on its third coat of paint pretty well rusted out sitting in a field. Pretty sad seeing as they were not given away when they were new.
So you could get one for under $2000 grand and make it look like a newer model car with some after market fiberglass.

I went to my first PCA event with my dad in 1992 while in college. It was a summer picnic. I remember seeing a longhood that had been converted to a 930 look and that I thought it was cool... That same summer, my dad looked at a 70 or 71S that the guy wanted $12k for and passed on it... If only we all had access to a certain DeLorean...

I'd grab the sports score book and end up with so much money (like Biff did in the second movie) that it wouldn't matter if a perfect 2.2S went for $100K today.
