My friend wants to put these on his 88 carrera, does he spacers or adaptors?

The D90s came on the 964 variants. Spacers will likely be needed as the offsets on the 964 and later cars changed.

I'm not sure of the offset differences but you can easily calculate the spacer needed based on the on the back of each wheel.

They also came on 928's. 1990 was their year of introduction, iirc. They won't look right on a 911, in many people's opinion, mine included. They definitely will need spacers, which aren't good to run.

Why are spacers "not good to run"? Porsche has used spacers on several OEM fitments, and I have never had any problems with OE or aftermarket spacers.

In response to the original poster, Design 90 wheels were also available on 944 S2s.

The extended track which puts that much more leverage/stress on the bearings, for starters.

D90s came on 964s staring in 89, 6&8X16, 944S2, 7&8X16 & 928s, 7&9X16.

You can use adapters, 1" works, and Porsche used spacers on 930s, early 944s, Porsche also used bolt on adapters on some 993 wide bodies.

You won't find many race cars, or cars driven hard, with spacers.
