915 whines in 5th
My '79 915 transmissiong has always made a whine in 5th gear. It is load dependent - whines under load, doesn't whine when you release the gas and coast. A little annoying on the highway, but not bad. It would make you think of a misadjusted ring and pinion, but it only happens in 5th. The noise is a little higher pitched than the bad ring and pinions I've heard, but those were in other makes of car.
The tranny was rebuilt around 25,000 miles ago, just a little before I got the car. The shop that did the rebuild has a good reputation, but I notice that all of the 8mm nuts on the outside are the nylocks that we use for the valve covers, instead of the original nuts. The receipt says the overhaul was for a second gear shifting problem. The tranny shifts great hot, a little balky in 1st and 2d cold. (I'm really delicate with transmissions - after all I drove an Alfa Giulietta years ago, before I got the 911.)
I'm using Mobil 1 in the trans.

Shifts at 2000 rpm when he's starting out on a cold New England morning.

being that 5th gear is the first to suffer when the trans runs low on oil, there may be some galling on the gear faces from long ago that were overlooked on the rebuild. or it may have been low on oil since.

Mine 911 whines pretty much on every gear (a little), is it bad or going bad (gear changes are quite ok) or should changing tranny oil to swepco help?
