right around 2200 RPM I get a whistling sound...get more and more high pitched...
it is only when I am on the accelorator...when I let off it is not there...
Also another prob...after driving around, if I have to do a 3 pt turn, getting into reverse is difficult...I know there are no sychros, but it used to be that I hold the cluthc for 4-5 sec, now I have to hold it down for 10-15sec to avoid crunching.
I did a clutch replacement and adjusted the coupler...1-5th are AMAZINGLY smooth, HUGE IMPROVEMENT.,..but reverse is harder to get into..

you may need to tighten the clutch adjustment a bit to get reverse easier. high idle makes reverse difficult too. whining in 5th only is probably 5th gear being worn. it's the first to go if the oil level gets down, because it's highest out of the oil. a ring and pinion noise would be in all gears under load.

Don't get pissed off...fix the problem or don't drive car until you fix leak or at least control it! I'm sure you looked hard but gotta keep looking. Where there is noise there is grief!! BE sure you have the correct 17 mm tool to remove plug.

Is this "whistle" sound like an intake leak? or are you talking about a mechancal squeal? and does it have the factory air box on it? (I take it we are talking about an 82SC 3.0...)

just posting a conc to this thread for future searches...
the whistling was caused by the tranny oil level dropping below the 5th gear...and so inadequate lube
the leak was a main shaft seal that was melted onto the guide tube...the guide tube was replaced and the main shaft seal came out with it..and consequently not replaced...
Thanks for all the help!!
