Default How to hold up a wale tail with shocks?

Hey there,

My newly acquired '82 911SC has a fiberglass wale tail and of course the single shock does nothing to hold it up, even though the shock works great. After doing some research on the forum, I found this: http://www.seinesystems.com/Ult-Strut-Rear.htm
Can anyone give me a "review" of this rather simple product? Bonus points are award if you have used it with fiberglass before.

Or, I would rather switch to a 2 shock system to keep the clean looks. Does anyone offer a "kit" that does not put 2 shocks on one side?

Thanks!

Not sure about an SC specifically, but my '88 has shock mounts on both sides of the body, and my shocks just mount to both the body and the hinge with a single bolt for each end. I could put one on each side, or both on the same side by using longer bolts and a couple of extra nuts to space them accordingly.
No special kit required to move (or add one) to the other side.

I fabricated a firewall bracket, and bought a second Turbo hinge (right side) and added the second hood shock. It works beautifully, and looks factory. I did a thread on it I think on Pelican.

Edit: Found one of the threads that I contributed to here http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...d-bracket.html

Use an individual shock on each side---do not double up on the driver's side as some aftermarket installers do. That will tweak the hinge and/or deck lid.

+1

The lid won't close properly with 2 shocks on one side because of the torque and flex in the lid.

Thanks for the link! That is very helpful.

Has anyone used the prop system that I posted a link to?

Yeah I'm not seeing a mount, but it might be hidden behind some insulation.

if i were you id take it off and hang it up .. you have some work ahead of you .. or you could use a hockey stick to keep the deacklid from falling down but the rumor around here is that's been done...

I didn't have a bracket either. I made one (see link) and bought a used Turbo hinge, which has a mount welded to it for the strut.

Nonsense. I installed the dual shock kit from Performance Products on my '85 and the lid operated and closed fine. I would agree that doubling up without regard to the load rating of the shocks may not be good.

Alan, did you have a fiberglass lid? Your statement holds true for the steel lid, as it's rigid enough not to flex.

Factory Carrera Tail on a steel deck lid. I could see the dual shocks being a problem with a fiberglass deck lid.

The only thing about the dual shocks is the price of the shocks and how long they last. For $40, I can get the prop rod and be done with it... that might be the way I go at this point

I think I've seen SC owners prop up the deck lid with a hockey stick - seems to work well.
