Post Gear lube

After reading that Mobil 1 is not good in a 915 gearbox, I can't help but wonder how a 915 acts with Mobil 1 in it? Is it likely to harm anything?

Thanks!

Hi Bob:

All of the transmissions that employ the Porsche designed balk-ring syncromesh (901-915-930) are somewhat of a conundrum.

On one hand, the ring & pinion's steep hypoid angles require a GL-5 rated gear lube with an EP additive to protect that sliding, heavily loaded surface. This very same lubricant property work in reverse with the syncros and operating sleeves in these gearboxes that depend upon some friction to shift correctly.

You may use Mobil 1 gearlube in these trannies but increased syncro, dog teeth, and operating sleeve wear will result. The ring and pinion will still be protected.

From long term experience, we have found that Swepco #201 works best in this series of transmissions. We use Mobil 1 in the G-50 and later trannies that have the Borg-Warner design syncromesh.

Hope this helps,

Question

Steve,

Where can you get the Swepco? Someone mentioned earlier you can't find it a Wal-Mart...

Thanks,

Charles

Hi Steve
I sell SWEPCO products on my site www.ritegear.com at a very reasonable price and can have it shipped to your door via priority mail.

Mobil One won't harm your 915.Swepco tends to work best for most people in the 915's
Swepco is available from a couple of suppliers, I get mine from www.allzim.com
