stuck in fifth, or no 1st, 3rd or 5th?
Hi. I bought a 1977 911 targa with a '78 3.0L engine "as is." The car
and engine are in great shape, with one exception.
The original transmission was stuck in fifth gear, I was told, and a
local tranny shop was given what they were told was a rebuilt tranny
from Germany to install. I am told by these guys that it didn't fit
perfectly when it was installed. Now it will not stay engaged in first,
third, and fifth gears. I was hoping someone would recognize the problem
and have a relatively straightforward solution. The numbers on the "rebuilt" tranny are 915/60/787/1495 in one location, and 915/1166 Rother in another.
If I can't get this ironed out, my option is to spend (Canadian) $2,200
to rebuild the original, an option I would prefer to avoid! I only paid
$10,000 for the car, and would like to stay within my budget of $12,000
to get it on the road.
Thanks very much for taking the time to consider this.

sounds like the shifter can't fully engage all those gears. check the shift coupler in the tunnel. the bushings may be gone. if the shift handle hits the front of the housing, (pull up the boot to see)a simple length adjustment of the coupler may be all that is needed. there is also a bushing under the shifter. look down thru the housing with a flashlight to see if it's still intact. there's a cover plate on the bottom of the trans that holds a shift lever guide, that may be loose. very common. all the oil will drain out upon removal. it's an easy inspection. just make sure it's in neutral and on reassembly keep the inner lever centered and it's tip engaged into the slots in the shift rods, as the cover is reinstalled. do the linkage check/adjust first.

I agree with John, since all the gears in the upper "H" pattern are popping out the shift mecho is not pulling arm forward enough. If both sides of the "H" were bad then ???da got me.
Mine needs a little more force in the same direction as your. Mine will pop 5th if I'm on rough terrain. Today is a rainy day so I got something to do
