Dave. Got to admit. Thats the best post of this thread. Every single word on that makes perfect logic and sense. Thank you. My eyes and ears are open for my dream car while I enjoy my two rock solid 911s on a daily basis. Just went for a 25 minute drive in my 3.2. Gosh, I love the gearbox and the purr of the engine. What a car. A guy at the gas station who was filling gas on a 997 asked me how much it costed for the restoration and I went what restoration

You've got some great cars for right now. It seems to me that you still need time to sort through options for what you want in your next Porsche. In your shoes I think I would put that off for a while and pour more time into widening your experiences even further:

You are happy to drive the 997 in all sorts of weather, so why not take it to the track for DE? These cars are more than capable of that and it will get you into that scene so you can assess whether some sort of track-oriented beast is what you want next...

Drive to the PCA Parade in Salt Lake City this year, if you can get the time off... You will meet tons of people see billions of cars and maybe come away with some other entirely new ideas...

Great to hear from all my personal favorites on this section. Bottom line is that life is good and you are all right. Enjoy what I have and just get a feel for the rest of the line up and get to know some long time enthusiasts in the area. Who knows may be I will be the custodian for their cherished possesion. My 997 is a joy to drive this time of the year over mountain passes. Even this morning driving it with gusty cross winds, escorted on either side by monstrous trucks spraying salt and clearing debris the vehicle gave me such a sense of security that no SUV has ever given me. Trust me these are the driving conditions that I see 6 months a year.

What is funny though is that my wife and daughters who know my "weakness" have been kept in the loop with all your respones. My wife says it should be a 356 cabrio (she loves the steering wheel and just the stunning looks of the car), the 13 yr old daughter says GT3RS and my 11 yr old daughter says 993TT, my heart says somthing similar to Steve McQueen's 911S. So as we talk all day and then go to a crowded mall ... only one spot is available for our Cayenne in 5 floors. This is what we parked next to. Wonder what year ( ? late 60s)and what karma this portends ?

Is that the gods speaking or what? It's a short wheel base, so 1968 or earlier.

That's a '65-'67 car, likely a 912.

68's had side marker lights on the front fenders.

Been away for a few days and decided to catch up on this thread. I was reading the different views and came to a conclusion, then Ed said it perfectly.
I would suggest a track weekend in the 997. Your first track outting will be an overload of information and the horse you choose to ride will not matter at all. Your 997 will blow your mind on the track. Once you get an idea of how and why you negotiate a car around the track, drive the 86 a few days. I think the DNA will resonate with you and you may see your choices more clearly. You may even get rid of all the P cars and get a Vette; no joking, they can hurt your feelings on the track.
A PCA drivers ed will open up a new world for you and it is VERY safe. I do think the cars you have now are saying more than you can hear.
These cars are fun, you enjoy them more than most, and I love your threads. I see exactly what your asking and encourage you to continue seeking answers. I feel like you are pondering the qualitative/quantitative differences in different automobiles as an enthusiast and that will be different from one person to the next.
If you had obtained two (or three) Degas paintings, and you asked what fourth painting would complete the collection; you would get this same thread.
Thanks for asking.
Much love and peace to you and yours.

Thanks WB. I love you my man. Wish I could get to meet you and spend some time with you. Ed's points are so well taken and that is exactly what I plan to do with my 997. It has PDK auto transmission and that will give me a chance to learn about the nuamces of performance driving without having the worry about a missed shift and then when I learn all other aspects, I can switch to my '86 coupe and learn proper shifting.

It is funny though how one's ideas change. As a first time owner of a Porsche back in '09, I was so much in love with the deviated stitching, and the leather everywhere on my 997. Now the more I read and learn about Porsches the more I buy myself into the less is more ideology and all these extras just detract one from the connection with their car. Porsches are all about the connection between car and driver and that is why the early era 911s and the GT3 line up for the water cooled era allures me. Who knows may be in a few years I might revamp my line up to a longhood 911 and a GT3RS. Whatever I decide, you know that I'll keep you all in the loop. BTW, what are some good sites other than the PCA mart and Panorama for someone in search for well maintained examples of longhood 911s. I don't see very many on RL.

You might want to spend some time at the early 911S resgistry site:

http://www.early911sregistry.org/forums/content.php

They do have a for-sale section in the forum, but I have never been in the market for an early car, so I can't say how good it is compared to PCA etc.

However, a lot of people seem to recommend this site as a good place for info and community, so if you are thinking of an early car, you may pick up some more info...

????

take the 997 to the track

????

who on earth would suggest such a thing

here is what's going on....too much looking and polishing, not enough driving - you are bored with cleaning then as they keep getting dirty...so buy one to clean and flog the 997 out at the track/pass and to/from work - it isnt going to gain value from not being driven (unlike an early car that you can polish all day and night and drive when its perfect out....

I am going through my old mental tapes and pretty sure this isnt a new concept coming out of my mouth to you

are you a PNWR member?
do you get the Spiel?
read the meeting minutes p37 of the March 2012 under the "Drivers Education" heading

"I think I "un-convinced" him to get an old car and convinced him to go to the track --- he saw side of his car he was un aware of and the light came on. I am hoping to see him many more times and watch his growth in driving. What a fantastic car he has!!"

Thanks Ed. You nailed it perfectly. Too much time cleaning and polishing. Even this cold chilly evening, i could not resist given it a bath. I will call you later in the week and may be we can meet for coffee this weekend. I do want to start doing some DS days with you. I just joined the PNWR member but don't get Speil. The shot of the 3.2 was taken a couple of minutes ago when I was walking back to the parking lot after attending to an emergency in the hospital. The BUG looks BIG next to our 911. I need to start taking my real camera with me to capture my cars in such spontaneous settings. Sorry these are just iPhone pics.
