Default 911 Cabrio Top - Towel?

I have a 1988 911 Cabriolet, and have been advised by friends to "lay a towel" on the plastic rear window when lowering the top to prevent creasing or damaging the window. I also was told to unzip the rear window after detaching the top from the header and before lowering it, which I always do. My question is: do you place the towel on "top" (that is, on the side that normally faces out, and faces "up" after it is unzipped), or underneath (that is, on the side that normally faces inside the car) the plastic rear window? Appreciate any advice!

Your best option is to unzip the rear window before lowering the top. This allows it to lay flat and not really subjected to scratching. Personally, I feel if you unzip, you really don't have to worry about the plastic window. But, a towel inside the folded window assembly doesn't hurt if you do not unzip. I unzip & lay a towl on top of the entire folded assembly before I install the canvas cover to keep the cover from rubbing on the (very delicate) silk liner. Never drive around without the canvas cover on the lowered top. Also, some folks feel you should fold the bar into the top, but I disagree, it should go on top.

Always unzip.
If you don't, the canvas above the window will "bubble" upwards and not lay flat. My window id seven years old, I leave my top down most of the year and There is little to no damage to it that I can see.

When I had my cab I always unzipped the rear window and laid a very soft, large microfiber towel on it before dropping the top.

Never got a scratch or any marks on it doing that. Might have been overkill but I'm pretty OCD about my cars, almost as much as Tim!
