For an old school 911 (pre '89) the only option that makes sense for track wheels are 15" wheels. I recently bought a set of 17" Fuchs replicas, and was shocked to see that the rims were 26lbs and 28lbs f/r. By having light weight 15" rims with R6 275/35 and 225/50 I will save 60lbs (!!!) of rim weight and 20lbs of tire weight. Knowing the exponential impact of rotating mass, the 15" wheels are no brainers. In addition I would get a lower overall gearing due to 23" diameter rather than 25" diameter. And obviously 15" rims and 15" tires are cheaper.
For posers and people that just want to show off, I would recommend 20" wheels with 2" or 3" spacers (LOL).

Lots of club racers who are also rennlisters with SC's and Carreras are running 15s with 225-45 and 275-35-15 Hoosiers R6 and A6 tires. It transforms the car. I had put them on my 84 Carrera E car and loved it. The car did move around more but I still liked it and wished I had made the change sooner. The car built revs much faster than with the 17s I had run on the car for years. I was able to fit the 275-35 Hoosier R6 on a 15x8 Fuchs with no issues, as I was told what would happen by a well known tire shop in the DC area who serves a lot of racers. I didn't have any rubbing issues on the oil lines or spring plate bolts (but as others have said these cars are all a little different). My car had 23 and 31 mm torsion bars and Charlie Bar sway bars.
You do end up using 5th a lot more at Summit Point and your shift points will be all different on the tracks you drive.
To get a really good read on it, PM GaryR and SeanF here on RL. Both are racing D class SCs and have put the Jeongblod 15x8 and 15x9 wheels on there car.

Mark, as you know, that also depends on choice of tires. I've seen one inch variance in width in the same size tires, from manufacturer to manufacturer. Same goes for OD and revs.
There are also a lot of folks running 17's successfully.

update: received the jongbloeds 16 8X9's. look great and are very light. i mounted R1's and weight is 36.9 lbs on all 4. that puts the wheels at 15.9 lbs front and 14.9 lbs rear. can't wait till next event to try them out.
