2.7 - I screwed up Z1 Didn't I?!!
Well, I did LOTS of homewrk prepping for a valve adjment. I rotate to Z1 area and note the 2 lines, fairly close together. Though there's a paint mark on the left mark. I want to be sure;
-Pellican article -RIGHT MARK
-Tune up video -RIGHT MARK
-FACTORY stamp on housing -RIGHT MARK
wrapping it all up, I note the factory sticker illustrating two hack mark and an arrow above the LEFT one, labled Z1. AAaaaaarrr!! 'Thought the factory mark would be gospel. Wrong -Right?? Replies appreciated, on or off list at: jdmuse@aol.com <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" /> <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" /> <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />

Helgrun,
I'd always go with the factory one. Before you redo anything, check the clearance with the other mark - I bet it doesn't change. The valve clearance is checked when the rockers are on the cam's "base circle" so I don't think it will be that critical if you are a few degrees one way or the other. Check and confirm for yourself.

I have always adjusted valves with the cam lobe pointing directly away from the rocker or tappet. That way I can just keep bumping the engine around and don't need to look at reference marks. Am I doing something wrong?

David,
You're correct, as long as the rocker arm is resting on the cam base and not the lobe it makes no difference where the marks are on the pulley in order to adjust for proper valve lash. It is only required that the piston be near TDC on a compression stroke to be sure that the rocker is resting on the cam base.
