Question Interior light only works in one position

I've noticed my interior light only works when I keep it in the "constant on" position. I can't get it to come on when I open either door. What gremlin have I encountered here?

I keep my interior lights off all the time. If they stay on by mistake (door doesn't close all the way), they tend to melt. Consider it a blessing. Merry Christmas Tim.

Blessing accepted. Guess that takes care of that problem! Thanks for clearing that up Jay! Merry Christmas to you also.

Same here, both lights, both doors. Haven't investigated yet...

Had same problem, bought new door switches and new rubber covers for both. Cleaned up contacts in both lights. All worked beautifully.

Same with the trunk light. When these things don't get used much, they often just need clean connections.

Although greatly coincidental, still would replace those door switches...it was one of the first things I did on my car upon purchase...

Best,,

hmmm. usually it's not the switch. It actually switches to ground. a tiny spike makes contact with the switch frame that makes a ground contact via the mounding screw to the body. take screw driver and loosen/tighten the screw a few times. then operate by hand the switch allowing it to spring open. that usually cleans up the contact points enough to make it work.

I would agree with retensioning the ground connections (first).

Upon purchase of my car, years ago, I found no service evidence of these switch changeouts......(please,..it's been +20 years?),..and immediately installed fresh hardware (especially copper)...WTF not?

Check those grounds....wild it's on both sides......DO check one side at a time as to ground verifications/rework.....I just want to know,..(hehe)

BEST!

I had a similar problem - turned out that the plastic which held the various contacts (the light lens toggles to different positions for various "on" settings) rotted. So I wasn't getting proper contact for each toggle setting. The housing pops right out - you might check that just to be sure the light housing is solid. A replacement light was cheap on Pelican.
