My two cents: Sounds like a nightmare! All the problems you saw just on cursory inspection will total in the thousands to fix, just in parts alone. Just the price of a new dash -- which you have to remove the windshield to install -- is cost prohibitive. I'd say this is only worth a couple grand, at most. And then expect to put at least $10k in to it. In other words, just find one that's already in half-decent shape.
There is nothing that unique about an '84 Carrera. It is just the first year of that particular model, which ran through 1989. There should be plenty more of them out there in reasonable shape for a good price these days.

I say, don't walk, RUN away from this one.
In So Cal, you've got a number of excellent to mint condition Carreras for sale every day of the week.
Why bother with this one?

Dan:
Porsche used part numbers starting with 930 for many of the parts on 911's and 930's. I would bet there are some minor parts that have a 930 number on a 944 too. My '90 964 has the same Shell oil sticker on it with a 930 part number.
Yes, the 3.2 Carrera started production for the 1984 model year and continued through the 1989 model year. Pressure fed tensioners were introduced on the 1984 model year Carreras and Turbos.
The "One Year Only Model" claim does not make any sense. There were no special edition 911's that year either other than the factory Turbo look.
The car is worth maybe $2000 - $3000 in my book. Like Sean mentions above, the dash alone could cost $1000 to get corrected and looking right. Body work and paint work could cost $5000 to over $10,000 for an excellent job. $500 tape and spray jobs don't help much for resale value on a 911.
You could potentially sink $10000 to $15,000 to ??? in this car to get it looking like a proper 911 should. Then you're still left with a 911 that has a questionable history with major paint work. Those types of cars can be hard to sell.
You're better off forgetting about this car and move on to a nice car with no stories. Hand painting the phone number on the hood in shoe polish tells the whole story about the current owner and how the car was treated in his/her possession. There are plenty good cars out there (especially in CA) if you look.
Hope this helps,
Jay

Sean, Sandy and Jay,
Yes, I think you all are right. I do have a tendency to let my ambitions of having a perfect...whatever...overload the realities of time and budget. If this were not true I wouldn't have so much sunk into my 944! and wouldn't be restoring a 1930's house!
This car intrigued me because I stumbled upon it and of course because the words CHEAP and NEGOTIABLE were lettered about a foot tall on it!
And certainly you are right that there are LOTS of potentially excellent deals on Porsches in Southern California. I wasn't actively looking for 911's so I'll just go back to keeping my eyes open to see what comes along. Thanks for the sanity check.
I would (and have) told others the exact same thing. Funny how you can't quite see the futility in yourself!!

Just keep us posted how much the owner was going to let it go for just for fun. It always amuses me to see what people think these cars are worth...especially in the condition you stated.

I am also amused by what people think our cars are work. I have a 944S and there are alot of times I find myself thinking write me out a chack for what you think my car is worth and you could have the title so fast it would make your head spin! It might be fun to advertise for the guy there might be somone on the list who wants to save one.

That's why it exists and has been so successful. It's been used for more fishing trips than Chris-Craft.

Here's maybe a clue to the "one year" only model. In Australia, Porsche released the new Carrera in 1984 that runs on leaded petrol and puts out 231HP. This model only lasted till end 1985 when they released the unleaded model and it lost about 30hp to 207hp. Consequently, 84-85 Carrera's are considered rarer and more "collectible" down under, and have a price premium. Maybe the guy selling it is from the "outback".

Find out what they are selling it for. If its around $1-2K and runs, what the hell buy it. The wheels and tail alone would cover you investment if you decide you don't want to screw around with it.
I hate seeing any Porsche that is run down and abused.
