Question

I hate to ask this again, but always wondered if there are objective scientific tests of the different synthetic and conv oils? I hear as many opinions (much more experienced than mine) on brands as well as weights. I just wanted to know if there was data. There certainly is a difference in price!

As far as Mobil 1 it is indeed better. Synthetic molecules have consistency through all temps. Something base oil used in dino just does not have. There is definately a betterness to synthetic oil. I have noticed differences in my equipment. 4x price better though...hmm

I notice that nearly every one on this forum uses Mobil 1 15-50, but it doesn't appear to be a Porsche recommended viscosity for this brand.

I'm getting ready to change over from dino to M1 15-50, but the Porsche recommended viscosities for M1 are 0-40, and 10-40.

Should I be nervous ....or are any of you that are running 15-50 M1?

I've recently changed to shell 5w40 synthetic in my '88 Carrera with 72k km (about 46k miles)- no problems at all. it sounds smoother no leaks at all and there is no oil consumption to talk of. The main reason I went for the Shell is that it is half the price of the M1 and Castrol synthetics here. Also, the F1 endorsements didn't hurt

If you want to get more background information there is a good article on the Pelican web site - try this link

I'm running my engine in, and will swap to synthetic after (it has crap oil in there at the moment to help the rings seat).

I was planning to change at about 500km to fresh dino and at 1000km to synthetic, then use the whole rev range. I was already planning to use M1 15-50, for all the reasons above.

Does this sound ok, and (Steve) what do you recommend as an oil change regime. I can't decide between 5000km (3k miles) and 10000km (6k miles). With Mobil 1, this starts to add up.

Final bit of info - engine is high compression short stroke 3.2 with S cams, so will get regularly spanked.

Thanks

Cam

Hi Cam:

Sounds like you are running the right regimen.

If it were me, I would change the oil & filter every 3K. This will ensure a long & healthy life for that engine and in the long run, there is a definite payoff with that maintenance schedule.

Enjoy!

Thanks Steve. If 3k is good enough for you, then it is good enough for me (I will have to remind myself that every time I go into the shop and ask for 12 litres of high dollar oil ).

I understand well what you are saying,....... but your engine will be very happy and thank you in the long run by not taxing your wallet,...
