Post Narrowing it down - need advice

I have been looking at used 911's for two months. Recently ran across a 92 C2 sunroof coupe loaded, black/black with 72k miles. Asking price is 31,500, but I have negotiated it down to 27,500. The car looks prestine in & out, drives like a dream. All service records, never driven in winter/rain, etc. While I haven't had it checked by a third party, the dealer claims the car is dry and is offering a 90 day, 3,000 mile warranty. I have asked around and the dealer is quite reputable, is actually the guy I was recommended to do a check of the vehicle by a porsche owner I know in the area. Questions are:
1. Does the $27,500 K price seem right? I have looked as far as 200 miles from my home and can't find a 964 listed for under 31K.
2. Third party check? And if so, who would you recommend in the 845 area code?

That price sounds about right from a dealer. Not a good deal or a bad deal, but a fair price (IMO). The car is due for its 15K mile service soon, assuming the last was done at 60K miles, so expect to pay for some maintenance in the near future.

I'm surprised you can't find a 964 for less than $31K in your area, but I guess it depends on what your local market is like.

ABSOLUTELY get a PPI from someone else. I'm sure you're excited to have found "the one," but that $27.5K car can quickly turn into a $35K car if it turns out to have problems. Top end rebuild: $5K to $6K. Front brake pads and rotors: $350 for just the parts (pads, backing plates, rotors). Broken distributor belt: $200. New tires: at least $450. WRECKED.

Unless you're a very knowledgeable Porsche person, IMO the PPI is so important that I wouldn't buy the car if the dealer wouldn't let me take it for a PPI.

I would concur with Drew on the price, especially from a dealer. I bought a 92 Coupe with 75K miles for $22.5K from a quasi-motivated individual. Average level of options on the car and original stereo package which sucked. Car was in ok shape, with the exception of a leaky AC compressor (ID'd in PPI) and an only average paint condition. I put $1500 into it right away for the 75K maintenance and a slave and master cylinder.

I generally believe that the dealers depending on the trade-in/auction condition, probably put about $1k into a car and flip them for $4-5K profit.

I would be really interested in what the warranty really covers. Is it just piece of mind or can you really get something repaired under it.
