Default Performance chips

Hello guys,

Im not new to cars and German ones in particular. I currently drive a 04 VW R32 and a 1988 911. This is my second 911. Had a 1984 before, triple black targa, but a friend offered me a deal i couldn't pass up and the 2nd gear syncro was on its way out so i took the deal.

I am very familiar with tuning for Volkswagen and Audi, but have little to no experience with the 911. I am looking for some cheaper mods i can treat myself to for the holidays. A basic chip, maybe a front strut brace.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

The car is a 1988 911 Targa with only 66k miles on it.

gberg911, if you have an 88 Carrera, then your wheels should be 16", not 15" as stated in your other thread.

They are the 15s. I have the 16s too, but wanted the wider tire in the rear!

Any suggestion on some chips for it?

The two main chips that I've seen recommended are:

http://www.911chips.com/index2.html

http://www.maxhpkit.com/

There may be others that I'm not familiar with. There are quite a few threads on this subject in the archives that should cover the topic well. Searching for "Steve Wong" or "Russell Berry" should get you started on those two chips.

Stick with Steve Wong. Russell just doesn't have the experience in 911's, IMO.

You'll have a much better selection with the 16" wheels.

Steve Wong's basic chip is fantastic. I put it in my recently purchased '88 Carrera, and it does make a difference. I'll be the first one to debunk anything, even stuff that I've bought myself (or voted for - ha!), and his chip made an undeniable improvement in the way my 911 accelerates. And he's a super cool dude.

I will look into steve Wong and his chips. 375 is pretty cheap... about the same for a N/A Volkswagen.

Go with Steve, he knows his stuff and has years of experience with the 911 aircooled motors.

We have always had satisfied and happy customers when we have installed one of Steve's chips. Putting another one in an 89 on Friday, and I expect the customer to be happy.

Cheers

No question Steve Wong - and for a carrera - the sweet spot is a euro premuffler and dual tip sport exhaust. Then get a steve wong chip to pull them all together.

You can do headers - but really the incremental increase with cubic $$ afterwards...

"and his chip made an undeniable improvement in the way my 911 accelerates."

A few seconds off of 0-60, right? Please, what a joke, it's one of the biggest
rip-offs. They called marketing like that 'snake oil' hype. Even some Porsche
independent mechanics also get sucked-in.

Read here about the so-called 'performance' chip: http://www.systemsc.com/tests.htm

Bottom line: Don't waste your money, and instead take a DE class and you'll really
'feel' a performance change!

No point.

Here's another vote, though: the Steve Wong programming is as good as it gets.
