keep thinking about this thread ... .

started searching ebay for some of the parts. any thought about either of these? only two versions I found on ebay at the moment. the Taiwan version can be had as more of a kit that includes a turbo. but does not have all the parts needed. Protomotive still sells they kit for $5,500.

now if I can just figure out how to put everything back together when I get my rebuilt fuel lines, cleaned injectors, and polished fan/housing back.

if I have some spare funds may pursue the turbo system.

Says made in Germany, high quality.

made in Taiwan. I like retaining the heat, and it has some additional parts, but concerned about quality.

Go for it! It really wakes up the car, mines still going strong with zero negative effects
thus far.... and I may have raced a 930 on the highway the other day....and smoked him... I almost felt bad

Anyways, If the german ones are indeed shnell then they should be high quality, but they look exactly the same as These OBX that are half the price. Me and a fellow rennlister are using the obx without a problem, but i will say the fitment wasn't absolutely perfect. It was close enough that it was fine, welds and appearance were also good, so for $370 I couldn't complain.

Also would like to add that a Begi adjustable FMU is a MUST. I used the fixed obx and vortech for a while and they were junk. Don't waste $200 buying twice when you can have a unit that won't break and you can tune for 260.

thanks for the reply.

got one interesting piece of advice from Protomotive. make sure your 911 has Mahle P/C. they comment most 87 had alusil and those are weaker and do not tolerate boost well.

got impression all up to 87 were Mahle. he confirmed my 85 is.

and thanks for the link to the obx headers. I clearly did not ask the correct question.

I sent you a PM. would like more info on where you sourced all your parts.

thanks.

Sorry for the late reply I have been very busy. I figured instead of replying in PM I would put this in the thread to hopefully help others as well. I will say most of my parts were ordered from ebay weather name brand or not.

  • turbo: Godspeed ebay t3/t4 .63 a/r $188 (so far over almost 2 months it is not smoking, spools great, and has had zero issues. It was an experiment to see if it would last and I can say from personal experience, that there has been zero problems with mine.)
  • turbo manifold OBX Ebay special $370
  • Wastegate Tial Found on ebay lightly used for $200
  • wastegate dump pipe Ebay special $40
  • boost gauge Random autozone $30
  • intercooler piping kit ebay special $70
  • blow off valve Greddy Type RS found locally on craigslist $150
  • blow off valve adapter pipe Ebay brand $20
  • 2.5"-2" adapter coupler Autozone-$10
  • FMU begi - Bought from Begi's websit $260
  • oil feed/return line kit Ebay brand, Had everything i needed to tap into the oil pressure sending unit and run the line to the tubo $40
  • Cone filter Already had one on my car, which reminds me you will need an adapter for you AFM so you can connect you intake piping to it. Which can be found at autozone.
  • -10 AN TO 20MM-1.5 adapter earls brand-summit racing $10
  • -6 AN TO 1/8th NPT adapter earls brand-summit racing $10
  • -6AN TO 16MM X1.5 adapter (male-female) earls brand-summit racing $10
  • -6 TO 16MM X1.5 adapter (male-male) earls brand-summit racing $10
  • 6 AN Stainless steel hosing (High pressure rating) summit brand-summit racing $20
  • 4 -6AN Hose ends (female) earls brand-summit racing $20
  • 12' of vacuum line autozone
  • oil/oil filter autozone
  • Protomotive chip Call protomotive
  • exhaust Ebay civic stainless downpipe I cut and welded to fit my needs- $50
  • Wideband air fuel ratio guage/kit AEM found new on ebay - $170

That's pretty much it, please note the prices are approximate and it took me over a few months to source it all. So far I have had no issues with any of my current parts whatsoever. I did start out with a fixed FMU and it was crap. Don't buy one, just spend the money on a begi.

Total cost from this list is about $1700 not including the cost of you chip/tuning software. Much less than $5000! I am currently making about 360hp at 7psi without an intercooler and a turbo that is probably a bit restrictive for top end.

I don't know who it was in the video, but this is quoted from the description

Taking it easy after some engine work. No brakes, low grip, huge understeer plus 370bhp makes it interesting!

Did this many moons ago for my 1981 911SC and only took it to 6 lbs of boost and went from 172 HP to 270 HP and a speed capability of about 172 mph. (No room for an intercooler). I shimmed out the pistons to lower the compression ratio to keep from premature detonation even with serious octane boosted fuels.

It made for a very clean installation with a Rayjay Turbo.

^very nice!
Well bad news tonight my godspeed turbo seals died, its smoking like crazy. It looks like some smoke might be coming from the engine bay near where the oil feed line goes so something my have happened causing the turbo to be starved for oil, I still read normal oil pressure though so it's unlikely. But if this was the case it would not be the turbo's fault.... either way I am going to have to tear into it tomorrow and if my $188 turbo died from being crap then oh well, it still lasted two months longer than i expected! haha. might have to try and upgrade to a gt35r now

I myself would look for a t25 from a junkyard saab between the years 94-02, fast spooling, will support 300 bhp, and oh yeah they are indestructible units. Also if you ever feel the need to go bigger JSP will spec them out to a hybrid t25/28 (slightly bigger than an 18G) or a full blown t28 that will support way more hp than you could throw at the motor.

I've always been a fan of throwing small turbos on motors that weren't really design for turbos to begin with, plus you really start talking to the guys with turbo cars and see what they run competition wise, you'll see they do not run huge turbos. most rally DSM's I've seen are running nothing bigger than an 18g, the saab guys always using hybrid t25/28's or t28's.

Anyways thats just my .02 cents, I'm thinking I should start parting up to give this a try! god that 3.2 with a t25, I'd be like full boost at 2500 rpm, talk about usable power band!

I should have never have read this thread haha

Even better idea than my previous post, take a set of the OBX headers for the NA cars, weld on some collectors for the garrett flange, and take a pair of GT17's off the NG900's!

oh lord, at 1.6l effective displacement a bank those gt17's would still be screaming by 3k rpm, you know could prop salvage a pair of dual inlet IC's from a NG900 too, and either run them in the fenders or under the deck lid, it would be the perfect combination of usage powerband and CFM

and my next project has begun

oh sorry to post bomb this as well

BUT I would not use that ebay special intercooling kit, I used one a few years back on my Saab... holy crap was that thing a POS. The rubber couples dried out and starting blowing leaks EVERYWHERE! And the couples broke all the time

granted I was running 23 psi, but I ended up just rerouting everything with PVC... and before you guys laugh check this out my buddy Rays DSM was running 35 PSI on PVC piping (this video shows when he switched out to alum piping from the intercooler to the supercharger, but from the turbo to the intercooler all PVC) and he runs some rallys with that bad boy
