One thing -

Targa or Coupe? Minnesota means possible rust doesn't it? As before check headstuds and also valve guide wear. Spend the PPI cash and check yer gearbox.

$14.5 is really tight, esp when you add the $1k ship fee and Uncle Sam's Junk fees (tax!) on that, basically makes your purchase over $16k which IMHO is over the fence. Also remember that this is in all probablilty a CASH ONLY transaction, most banks aren't going to finance that whole amount (most likely under $12k they'll do assuming the credit is top notch) Which will kill most, if not all the buyers at that price. Also, for that price, it should need little or anything to make it totally roadworthy. Sellers have a tendancy to let things go before they sell.

Knowing that you're gonna want to weigh that against the overall condition of the car, how close to what you really want, others in the area you can look at, how impatient you are, etc. etc. and if it all checks out? Take it, it's only money.

If it's a coupe, it's virtually like my 81 I just purchased, (122k on odo) with PERFECT paint, ALL reciepts and so on. Needed tires and pads though.
I'm in for $12k, cash and carry. No bank hassles, just save some extra for tax.

It's a coupe...I thought the price may be too high as well...not a MN car (from Arizona dealer)...the impatience is a factor but I will try to make myself wait if needed, I drive a suburban in the winter and it's only a few months away <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" /> unfortunately...16 does make me over my budget of 10-14, but my wife doesn't care [not a type-o ]

Why are you in such a hurry? Look around for a few months, get familiar with prices, and make sure you get what you want. Also, read up extensively on the models you are looking for.

There is no quicker way to lose money than by buying a crummy Porsche, unless you can pawn it off on some other sucker. Believe me, I was in your shoes, hot to get a car quick, but I am very glad I waited - I got a great car at a great price and it was local.

Schuey:
Take your time and find the exact car you are looking for. My search for mine took 9 months. The price is definately high. I wouldn't buy any car that has been repainted, without being able to inspect it personally (ie: being there when the mechanic has it on a lift).

My advise is to find one within a reasonable distance of where you live. Long distance purchases seem to be a big gamble, based on some of the posts I've read on this board. If the paint faded, then I'd bet that the gauges faded as well and the interior probably won't be in the best shape. Since this is a dealer car, where did they get it? Was it a trade in, or did they pick it up at auction. How good was the repaint? Did they remove the glass and trim, or just use tape. I'd look for one with original paint. My 84's paint is original and with the exception of alot of dings and rock chips, it still shine when clean, even better with a fresh coat of Zymol.

I'd keep looking. You'll find a nice one.

Lots of good advice here, Schuey. I looked for six months and found a really nice, original, well cared for car with all the records. They're out there if you're patient, and you'll be really glad you waited for the right one. (I think my dad said something similar about my wife...)
