Post 81 911SC PURCHASE

How do 1981 model 911's (sc) compare to later model 1980 911's (sc)? Just test drove a 1981 911sc Targa with 57K original miles. Having it inspected tomorrow by mechanic. Looks like good maintenance record. One owner...wants 17K for it.

Thnks for any feedback,

glenn

Check out http://tech.rennlist.com/ if you havent. There are pretty good descriptions of every model. Also, scroll through the list; your question is quite common and there are lots of posts to query.

Good luck

Not a significant difference between the 81's & later SC's - to quote Bruce Anderson's "Performance Handbook", the 82 had an alternator with an internal voltage regulator, the camshaft sprocket was changed from a large nut to a bolt, and the scale for the oil temp guage gradations were changed ". What upgrades does it have ? The 3 most important being the Carrera tensioners, pop-off valve, & replacement of the rubber-centered clutch with the spring centered clutch. I can almost guarantee that you will hear that 17K is too high (Excellence Market Report for 81 SC, anyone?); however, if the upgrades have been made, and it passes a PPI (leak-down, compression, etc with strong numbers)and you have all the service records, granted you may be paying a premium, but if the car's been well taken care of, in my opinion it's worth it. As was pointed out to me by a respected local P specialist -"You can either write one big check or a series of 'little checks'to make everything right". Good luck with your decision!
