Default 1989 930 Turbo 1,000 miles!

Yesterday I took a drive to a local Starbucks and passed a small family owned neighborhood garage that I have have passed hundreds (if not more) times. They usually deal with standard types of cars and it is an old style local place. In the corner of my eye I see a Guards Red 911 with tail and decided on my return trip with coffee in hand to stop by.

Upon closer inspection, it was a 930 and looked spectacular. Perfect Guards Red over tan interior with perfect seats. I walked into the office of the garage and asked about the car as it is not their typical customer car. They said that it is owned by a local collector and it has only 1,000 miles.

It was there because it was not running properly. Gummed up injectors, and maybe fuel pump, etc. The gas must be real old!! I asked if they are experienced in working on these cars and the response was typical "we work on everything...the same nuts and bolts hold them together". They were having trouble sorting out the problems so I suspect the knowledge required goes beyond nuts and bolts.

So, somewhere near my home is a collector with several cars with no miles that will erode over time if not used properly.

Grrrr. if that car is still there in a few days, I might ask for the phone number of the owner and make a bid for a poor running 930.

Mark

why in the world would a collector take that car to an "all brands" shop is beyond me!!!

We have several eccentric collectors in my area...some never drive them, some drive them in conditions that would make you scared and say...it's a car, drive it....(a $300+k car!!!) well, collectors and people with money are all interesting...

most of them at least know where to take their cars for work and the "network" of specialists is well connected..they often refer each other work and each knows the other will do a proper job....

takes a weird story

You might try going back to the shop again and telling them you are interested in buying the car and would give them a $500 finder fee if you bought it. They might give you the #, if not ask them to call while you are there to talk to the guy, if he will talk. You might allude to them doing the repair if you buy it but don’t sign anything.

Jakeflyer,

Good thoughts. I just drove past the garage this Sunday morning. Car is probably in one of their two garage bays. $500 is a good number for a lead on a great car, subject to buying it.
