79 SC oil cooler help
I have recently aquired the above car. We have a small problem.
The lines that run rear to front (and back again) to supply oil to the front mounted cooler, pass thru a cast alloy junction fitted in the inner area in front of right rear wheel. This thing has cracked and we are struggleing to remove the 30 odd year old fittings.
Does any one know what this fitting is, what it's purpose is, and can it be dispensed with and just run the pipes for and aft without this.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Sound like you might be referring to the thermostat which is located in the right rear fender well, just in front of the wheel. The two lines that exit out of the thermostat go to go to the engine and the oil tank.
Hard to tell w/o pics. I suggest you go to www.pelicanparts.com and look up Project 26-Installing/Upgrading The 911 Front-Mount Oil Cooler. Better yet, buy 101 Projects For Your Porsche 911 from Wayne. He is the Owner and CEO of Pelican. He wrote the book. Its about $22 and well worth it.

It is a thermostat. It is not to be dispensed with, unless perhaps in an emergency.
Penetrant and heat to help release the fittings. Good wrenches, pipe wrench even, long cheater pipes. Sometimes turning in the tightening direction first can help to break things loose.

its a thermostat and you need it. is the housing acutally cracked? would like to see pics. Usually there is great care taken to save the threads on the tstat when replacing leaking oil lines. We usually try the penetrant and heat but after 30 years of heating and cooling they are relunctant to budge. Since we are usually are replacing the rear lines we try to cut the nuts on the oil lines with a cutoff wheel until they can be split off the tstat without damaging the tsat threads. How are the rear oil lines? still good? replacing them? what about the fronts? if you can get the four nuts off without damage then you can replace just the tstat. if everything is shot or you damage the tsat threads, you'll be replacing it all. I think it will all depend what you can get separated with destroying the parts.
