so how do you fix one that isnt working right? The grooves surely cause an issue at some point in its life...then what

If it fails the test by showing voltage peaks and valleys, then you'd open it up and bend the wiper arm to follow another track. Or, buy a low mileage used one, which is what I'd do.

My "discovery" on one of my other cars, a Mercedes 190 2.6 was bad connections in the fuse box the washers and wipers did not function, rotation of the fuses solved that problem and
a a problem with sometimes difficult starting! Resistance was obviously the problem -worth a try.
