Cool OT: resale values, quality of cars SC v. Boxster

i was just sitting behind the computer browsing at cars, parts and reading afew forums here on rennlist and a thought crossed my mind......a boxster could be within my reach.......

background.....im 25 live in hawaii work for uncle sam defending freedom abroad, (read) poor sailor in the navy.....have a 911 sc targa with whaletail (awesome car) but often desired a newer porsche. in theory i could sell my car for about 15k, take a loan for about 12k and end up with a 97 or 98 boxster in decent shape........

but my reluctance is i love the look of the 911, i dont have a car payment now, and its easier having a few dollars in the bank for repairs upgrades and so on....i hope to have a glass out paint job done in a year or so, new interior and c2 wheels and had pondered the thought of the targa to cab conversion offered in tweeks.....
i have done my best to keep my car up. ive done tensioners, new tranny, clutch, shocks tires alternator, oil tubes, pop off valve, new battery, punched cat. converter, engine balanket, and recent tune up with valve adjustment....

scary when you go thru recpts..i have 5100.00 worth of recpts!!!!!!

is the boxster the the same quality car as my bullet proof sc?

has anyone else been in this predicament?

curious to hear your thoughts and opinions...

From what I've heard, a Boxster is near maintenance free (other than oil changes) until you get up to about 100,000 miles. At that point, you're looking at a new clutch and probably a timing belt replacement. I'm quite certain that the engine has to be dropped to do the clutch, so it's a somewhat expensive job. I believe the belt can be changed through access panels behind the back seats, but it's still going to cost you some.

As compared w/ the SC, there's a big difference. You don't have to adjust the valves, there probably won't be any oil leaks, the transmission should shift a lot more easily, and the compartment should be much more comfortable (better heat, AC, etc.). In short, the Boxster is new car, whereas the SC is 20-year-old car.

From what I've heard, you want to stay away from the 1997-1998 Boxsters, if you can. They had some troubles to start, and if you have enough money to buy a newer one, do so. I expect that after the introduction of the new model Boxsters, used Boxsters are going to continue to depreciate rapidly. If you waited a year, I bet you could find a good 1998 or 1999 Boxster with around 50,000 miles in the low 20K's - IMHO. That might be wishful thinking since I'm hoping to do just that in about a year. However, I think I'll keep my 911SC as a second car.

I guess the bottom line is, the SC's are tending to appreciate while the Boxsters are tending to depreciate. I suppose if you wait long enough, you can sell your SC and buy a Boxster for about the same amount of money

Thumbs up

Good choice to have. I like the SC on the track better then the Boxster (the SC is paid for). It would not be a bad choice to buy a older Boxster and drop in the 3.6 like is being discussed on the Boxster page. http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=12&t=000332

If you want a convertible, I think the Boxster is the way to go (my opinion), since it was designed to be one. I do not believe that altering a Targa into a Cab will cost you less then selling the Targa and buying an 83 Cab, if you want to stick with an SC.

A mint SC with a whale tail.. That's a classic..
If I were you, I will not make the move. Do it only when you can do an even swap... On second thought... not even that. Do it when you can swap for a boxster S..that's more like it.

cloud,

im working on getting my 911 into mint condition....its a slow expensive process and i try to get things done as i can afford them, not having a car payment really helps stash some cash for rainy day projects!!!!

Me either. A nice SC is $32-$50k now and a 1997-1998 nice Boxster is a $12k car.

The only reason I would take a Boxster over a SC is air conditioning.. And even that who cares..

I picked up an '89 Cab and sold my '99 Boxster to make room for it. I haven't driven it yet (it's having some work done), but a buddy who's owned both says that after owning the Boxster I won't like the Cab.
