powder coating/ alt rebuild in Portland, OR
Can anyone recommend a business in the Portland, OR area to rebuild an alternator or would new be a better option ($275-Vertex)? Also while I have it apart, I will have the fan/shroud powder coated. Any recommendations on whom to do that work? This is for my '83 SC.
Thanks in Advance...

Bob,
Just went through the same drill with my 81SC. Learned a little about 'rebuilt' - mainly the extent of the rebuild seems to vary by rebuilder. Some will replace just what needs replaced; others will do a more extensive rebuild, and naturally, the costs will generally correspond. Since mine was fried, I was initially considering a rebuilt one from Vertex (which also requires a core exchange), but they also offered a new Valeo at a very competitive price, so I opted for new. If you go with the Valeo, make certain that the hole of the cupped spacer on your present alternator spindle is large enough to fit on the Valeo; it wasn't on mine, and I had to replace it. And since the 82+ has the internal voltage regulator, you probably don't have to have enlarge the hole on that f/g air guide that attaches to the alternator. RE: the powder coating, check out the "show us your fans" post on here; obviously not even remotely as durable as powder-coating, you can do some pretty neat things with a $4 can of Plasti-kote spray paint.

The '82 & '83 Paris Rhone alt is worst one
ever used by Porsche. It is prone to over-charge
and self-destruct. Most alt. outputs will
"fold-back" (drop in voltage) under heavy load
to protect itself.
This alt. has a stator which is too strong
for the diode plates. Large Porsche batteries
can over-load the alt and destroy the diodes.
Also, trying to quick-charge a low battery by
reving to a high RPM will kill them.
For $275, be on the safe side and buy a new
one for that price. If a rebuilt is used
make sure it has an OEM regulator by Paris
Phone. No junk regulators please.
If you had a 3.2 housing, use the 90A of
the '84-'89 Carrera.
Good luck

Well,
Got the car back together yesterday. Al took a little longer than I had hoped, missed a few races and some sunny weather driving, but it was worth the wait. He did a nice job with what he had to work with. I ended up buying a rebuilt alternator through Sunset Porsche where I could use my $100 coupon so it was only $155 for the part. Engine compartment looks a lot better, although not a show stopper, and it makes a lot less noise. Cheers! <img border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" title="" src="graemlins/drink.gif" />
