Unless one is "jonesing" for a $20K+ moneypit, thats a self-powered parts car.

While these cars were galvanized at the factory, zinc is a sacrificial material and Targa's are well known leakers so you may find a lot of hidden (and obvious) corrosion . Sitting outside like that with an unknown power train and facing a $10K paint job, this is a car to help others keep on the road.

Sad thing is I believe that it was well cared for before landing in the current owner's pocket. If I can get it for a song it would be a fun project.

$10,000 for a paint job? I'd never consider that on something that far gone. I'd rather paint it myself and take the blame for any imperfections. :-)

 

If they gave it to you, $ 20,000 will make it a good $ 15,000 car, but $ 25,000 will make it a much nicer
$ 15,000 car

Sean, I've considered 928s but currently drive a V12 BMW and am looking to get into an old-school project. The V12 is murder to work on and I would assume it is the same with a 928? There seem to be quite a few on the market for not much $.........

 

This 911 may be a good car to have if it has a good engine and trans. Say $2000 of less. Drive it until you find a good body and mate the two. A 944 or 944 turbo is a much better way to go rather than the 928/666.

 

Funny you should say that. There are a small number of good bodies and interiors on the market right now. The big hurdle is getting it..............There is a bit of sentimental value to the owner...

 

I guess I have to be the devils advocate here but in my opinion just because the paint has faded
considerably doesnt mean the rest of the chassis is in sad shape ,yes sitting outside is a no-no for targas
in general but these early galvanized chassis can stand up to alot of humidity and moisture..
Now if you add salt to the equation it can mean a completely different outcome!
This body looks pretty good and straight to me it does appear before the current owner took possession
it had been fairly well cared for remember it's a one fasmily owned car! thats basically ONE owner!
If the engine/trans and mileage check out I'd say it's minumum 5K car maybe a little more.
I'm currently in negotiation with a second owner '78 SC targa with beautiful paint and reasonable
mechanics for not much more,once mechanically sound it's a 15K car!
