So is that noise from your beloved 911 engine an exhaust leak or the dreaded head to cylinder leak? I got a tip today from my air cooled engine, Russian tractor expert/mentor.
Use a can of brake clean or carb clean and with the engine just started from cold, at a idle, spray some of the fluid around the top of the cylinder, base of the head mating line. If the fluid goes dry instantly from the hot exhaust then there is a seal problem with head to cylinder. If not, spray the gasket for the cylinder head to pipe outlet and see if that gasket is leaking. Probably a widely used method for checking leaking, but new to me.
