Default Rear engine grille query

I have a 1981 sc with a whale tail, I would like to replace the whale tail with a flat black engine grille (lid), I have been offered one but its off a 1972/73 911.....
Will this fit my boot lid?
Whats the difference between the two grilles?
And, in your opinion which looks better? (my car is black so grille will match nicely...)

I may not be understanding your question correctly, but on my car (a 1985 Carrera with the OEM tail), the whaletail is bolted on and once removed I would be left with a plethora of holes in the sheet metal. Most people who want to change from a whaletail to the "plain" tail look for a used decklid and have it painted to match (if necessary). You could either keep the original tail and decklid, or sell it and recoup most or all of your cost.

Conversely, you could remove the tail and have the holes welded up and then painted, but that will cost some coin to get perfect. I think the grills should fit fine though.

The grill is constructed differently and looks different, but it will fit.
