Don’t know if this has come up, but do you work on you own stuff? With the 911 it can make a major difference as to how empty your wallet is. And with that in mind, the SC did not have the oil controlled chain tensioners. Many SCs were updated to the Carrera oil type and it is a consideration if you go, the best bang 911 for the buck, SC.
I've read about the updated chain tensioners. Also the air box pop-off valves.
Sounds like I just have to find the right car for the right price, regardless of year. the only thing is that I really wanted a M491 Turbo-Look option, but they're pricey!

We dare not count the costs. In Ed's case, it's hard to get much more bang and I am sure it cost some bucks. Knowing what I know, the costs of Ruby could have bought 2 993s. Probably not altogether in context with this thread.
As for Bang/buck in today's market...964(89.5 - 94 as Ed points out above) and Boxster.

If you like the 83 and 89 equally then quality is the only thing to go for. However, the two cars are quite different to drive and you may find a preference for one over the other. My latest 911 is an 82 SC, bought specifically because it was an SC. I'm not a big fan of the g50 in the 3.2 although it is a nice box to use and very easy. For me the 915 is a more satisfying unit and fits the character of the IB cars better. Similarly, the SC engine is a notably more revvy unit than the 3.2, something I prefer. If you prefer the ease of use of the g50 I'd go the full hog and get a 964 - an awesome first 911 and much easier to live with, power-steering and all. Naturally, all said IMHO - it really comes down to taste. Drive each model and the decision is likely to make itself. And it's great fun looking...I never stop!
